VEEERY serious question about making thumbs!

Hi all,
have you ever made thumbs? What software did you use for that? :glugglug

Silent_Thunder 08-16-2004 03:43 PM

I want a very simple crop tool. Just load your original image, draw the rectangle, crop it and you have a thumb :)

That is a serious question :1orglaugh

I do everything in Photoshop, and that includes submitting.

Photoshop is a great image editing tool. But if you need just a quick thumb of 100x100 or 88x88 for gallery submitting, loading photoshop and doing all the stuff to reach the desired thumb would take too much time. Those thumbs dont deserve such efforts. There should be a simplier software for doing that.

Nobody is making the thumbs anymore :(

If you have the actions saved, then making thumbs in photoshop is fast (even if you're only doing a few).

Create an action :

Your pics aren't square but you want your thumb to be, so here's how I would do it.

Resize the image to 120x160 or whatever it ends up being with the aspect ratio.

Set the mask tool at fixed size (88x88 - 100x100) and one click on the image gives you the thumb size you want.

Add a step to sharpen, adjust contrast etc.

I know it's not the easiest way but it's my way :winkwink:

But actions wont help if you want to crop a specific hot spot of the pic. One TGP script has a perfect thumb creating system. Cropping tool.

A quick thumb for gallery submitting!? "Those thumbs dont deserve such efforts. " !!!!!!! ??????

When you get listed on thumb preview sites your thumb is the most important part of your gallery... and you have a LOT of competition especially when the TGP owner is smart and uses a script like comus that sorts the thumbs by clicks. On my one TGP you can get completely knocked out if your thumb doesn't get enough clicks to stay up on the page .. and I've got over 1k of galleries in my database that your thumb has to compete with.

I submit 5 galleries per day and I take the time to find just the right image.. I usually end up cropping every single image in the gallery in different places to find just right crop .. and then take the time to sharpen it and do any contrast and colour balance adjustments etc. to get it PERFECT.

And it pays off .. I recently spent $30 on a paid spot on bunny teens and the thumb ended up in the #1 spot in the hall of fame for 2 weeks. That was $30 and 10 minutes of cropping and fine-tuning well spent... it would have been money down the drain if I used some auto-cropping tool to produce a crappy thumb that no one would click on.

Congrats with your achievments and thanks for the criticism against my view. Will keep this in mind :thumbsup

I'm picky, I use Photoshop. Sure it takes a bit longer but I wouldn't be satisfied if it looked like shit.
