You are probably too young to remember, but Paypal was originally known as X.com

It's more or less for vanity and memorability.
You buy a name like that, last thing on your mind is type-ins.

i only know x.com and z.com, the value of those must be pretty nice since there are only a few left around

I can't say I fully understand the reasons why ICANN decided to stop distributing one letter domains.

Yes back then paypal.com and x.com paid those wonderfull 5.00 per signup. It was a big time deal when combined with ebay.com made some serious bank.
