1 letter domain names (www.x.com)

are there any others up and running? paypal must own www.x.com because it redirects to their main page

what does a 1chr domain name go for anyway?

AVM 08-15-2004 02:42 PM

Yes, paypal does.

Also:
www.I.net is owned by FMA.
www.z.com is own by Nissan

Oracle Porn 08-15-2004 02:42 PM

www.z.com

AVM 08-15-2004 02:43 PM

As for value? No idea, not really a market for them,
as no one ever says any. My guess is seven figures. :2 cents:

fr8 08-15-2004 02:44 PM

I dont think a single letter domain would get that many typeins.

polish_aristocrat 08-15-2004 02:44 PM

why does PayPal need x.com ?

You are probably too young to remember, but Paypal was originally known as X.com

It's more or less for vanity and memorability.
You buy a name like that, last thing on your mind is type-ins.

As far as I know, 1 letter com/net domains can be renewed however if/when they drop, they cannot be registered again.

No, x.com was a banking site. I had an account there.

They were bought out by paypal and integrated. :)

Its cool cause they both launched about the same time and gave those $5 signup bonus.

tungsten 08-15-2004 03:24 PM

i only know x.com and z.com, the value of those must be pretty nice since there are only a few left around

polish_aristocrat 08-15-2004 03:27 PM

I can't say I fully understand the reasons why ICANN decided to stop distributing one letter domains.

Sounds like an old wives tale to me.

freeadultcontent 08-15-2004 07:07 PM

Yes back then paypal.com and x.com paid those wonderfull 5.00 per signup. It was a big time deal when combined with ebay.com made some serious bank.

It's not about type-ins. It's about branding. I mean seriously, imagine a porn site at x.com

Put a quality site up there and you can bet your ass nobody is going to forget it.
