It's not common over here at all. On the other side of my family, two cousins of mine are living together (maybe married?) and it's a real scandal.

The stuff about higher chances of genetic defects is only partly true. Inbreeding increases the homozygocity in a population, thus increasing chances of birth defects.
However, on single occurrances within a population the effect is really quite small even with siblings, and with cousins the effect is *really* small.
