Without AMERICAN POWER, the world would go to SHIT?

Thesis: Without American hegemony the world would likely return to the dark ages.

Article: http://www.opinionjournal.com/editor...l?id=110005244

Talking points: Culture and advancement is not fixed in any one geopolitical point. If this is true, then why argue for the need for American protection of 'fixed bases' of culture/technology/progress?

pimplink 08-14-2004 09:37 AM

From the article:

Waning empires. Religious revivals. Incipient anarchy. A coming retreat into fortified cities. These are the Dark Age experiences that a world without a hyperpower might find itself reliving. The trouble is, of course, that this Dark Age would be an altogether more dangerous one than the one of the ninth century. For the world is roughly 25 times more populous, so that friction between the world's "tribes" is bound to be greater. Technology has transformed production; now societies depend not merely on freshwater and the harvest but also on supplies of mineral oil that are known to be finite. Technology has changed destruction, too: Now it is possible not just to sack a city, but to obliterate it.

Obviously, this thesis is a joke. Political theory states that a vacuum of power draws new political forces. That power concentrates in the hands of the few. There are plenty of very strong countries that could replace the U.S. over a short period of time. This article also argues that American hegemony is a good thing which isn't an easy thing to prove. I can point to dozens of countries that don't believe that is true - Central America primarily.

Pax Americana is a myth. We are the most warmongering nation in the history of Earth. Since 1776 the U.S. has sent troops abroad to fight over 200 times surpassing the Roman Empire and the Mongols.

You raise very good points BUT the concept of a Pax Americana only holds for the post WW2 period. In this period, US incursions are much fewer than the Roman/Mongol empires you mention above.

US gives itself way to much credit.

The world can do without it no doubt.

But does that mean it should?

Now there's a question :glugglug

But didn't civilization began in "non-white" areas (Mesopotamia, Harapa River Valley, Lower Nile, Yangtze river valley, etc)?
