hardware DivX (XviD) player will ruin my life.

S-Video out of my laptop was bad..
but I just picked up a new Phillips DVD player that plays MPEG-4/DivX/Xvid/AVI's and just about everything else...

couple hours of download yields four or five movies still in theaters that fit nicely on a single DVD-R at decent enough quality....

not to mention the 16x burner I just installed...

I'm in heaven.

pubenemy 08-12-2004 09:23 PM

Nice, what model/how much was it? Ive been contemplating getting one, but I usually just use tv out to the tv and its been fine looking.

The Truth Hurts 08-12-2004 09:26 PM

DVP-642.. under $80(us)

only place I found it in stock was Best Buy (online).

got it, plugged it in, did the firmware upgrade I'd already prepared for, and it works awesome...

the remote is a little shitty and poorly laid out though.

iwantchixx 08-12-2004 09:33 PM

i got a cheap ass Daytek that does all that and more straight out of the box, only thing is, it crashes if you switch tracks or video or mp3 files too quickly. Like total lockup. pisses me off. So i modded my xbox with media center on it...

Magg 08-12-2004 09:34 PM

Hey Truth, Im looking for Collateral... Got a hookup for me? :)

this one did it straight out of the box... the firmware upgrade was to add some support for avi subs and other minor shit...

Depends on how much you upload.. and if you have a router, you better know how to setup port forwarding, or you won't get very good speeds at all.

http://azureus.sourceforge.net is the bittorrent client I use and recommend.

mmmm can you setup bittorent on a unix box? sounds like an idea!

Slutworks-Lester 08-13-2004 10:10 AM

Packetnews is your shopping list,
IRC is your checkout counter :)

I was thinking about buying something similar but instead I just used an old computer and made a cheap HT-PC. I just run svideo out from my video card to my TV and wham, I have a all-in-one media center. I'm going to upgrade my sound card and maybe, later on, use a old server rack to store all my music and movies but really it saved me a little bit.

Persius 08-13-2004 10:14 AM

hehe i just use my Modded XBOX to run all my xvid/divx/svcd/dvdr

Was just going to say the same thing - with a modded Xbox and XBMC, you can transfer the XviD files (or any other media format) right over to the machine via FTP, and then play them. So no time spent burning onto CD/DVD - and you can easily delete them when you're done.

Yes, it supports DivX/XviD. I checked on videohelp.com and philips.com and both confirm it.

Thanks for the link, Vitasoy. I'm gonna pick one up this weekend.

Yep it's the right one, you may need to upgrade the firmware though.

He's talking about Direct Connect.. which is good, but you have to share a LOT of files for them to let you connect.
