Say goodbye to freedom of the press

Time Magazine reporter Matthew Cooper held in contempt for not revealing sources, facing 18 months in jail, NBC's Tim Russert (Meet the Press) facing the same trying to cooperate.

Judge Thomas Hogan says there is no federal reporter's privilege, and that Cooper and Russert cannot legally refuse to divulge sources to the grand jury and under the law he can keep Cooper and Russert in jail until they agree to talk and could fine their employers every day until they comply with his orders.

Here's some news articles if you're interested:

Yes, but now judges are putting it on the record.

Remember the news only reports to you what they want you to know, There is no real freedom of the press it's all about who's in office and the power they weild....

12clicks 08-11-2004 07:47 AM

um just to point something out to you idiots, this investigation is being driven by the liberals who are backing up the lies of this chick's husband.

but you go on thinking its a Bush thing. :1orglaugh

Groove 08-11-2004 07:51 AM

Forcing journalists to divulge their sources sucks bigtime. It means
that nobody will talk when the issue involves powerful people.

well when they put a persons life in danger they should be tortured until they give up the info.

And you know what it will lead back all the way to bush.

There's a huge difference between freedom of the press and breaking the law. This guy publically disclosed a CIA agent's name, comprimising a number of different operations, and perhaps resulted in more than a few deaths.

you read those articles in under a minute?

TheFuture 08-11-2004 08:03 AM

Makes you wonder why no News Story covers the topic of "Big Tobacco" and how it kills.

Imagine this, you are a sponsor of a network, and your product is known to kill people. Now imagine that you are the largest sponsor of that network... Do you think that network would EVER say a negative word about you?

Do you all really think Free-Press is REAL? Open your eyes.

EVERYTHING is run by the all mighty dollar. There are no values anymore other than the value of a greenback.

Your freedom is bought and sold daily without your knowledge. Ammendments, laws, and statutes passed with hidden agendas, influences, and financial backing.

You are not free. You are a slave to your political party. Go to war they say? Send us your children to fight in this war on "terrorism" that which we are creating to help our economy.

Do we fund these terrorist groups? It is a possibility. Never doubt that.

Freedom has never been ours. Freedom will never be ours until someone takes a stand against the oppressors.

You can whine all you like, it does nothing. A kind word and a gun is more influential than a kind word alone.

This rant has been brought to you by...

I tought it was Novak that had disclosed this:

He must be a big shot who is lonely. If I made really big money , last place you would see me is on this board. People in his life must not respect him so he tries to get respect here.

cherrylula 08-11-2004 11:00 AM

Then why isn't anyone being prosecuted for all the leaks of personal info about the girl in the Kobe case?

But that case only has to do with some slut and a hahahahahaha so who cares.

And if this guy does come clean about a cia leak, he will probably wind up in a ditch anyhow.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

damn in reality that's a tough one.. I mean of course freedom of speech is a very big issue and cases that threaten it should be watched very closely..

on the other hand, leaking a CIA or any other under cover person's name and identity is a very serious issue and could cause a lot of harm to not only the person in question but also his contacts..

very sticky stuff and a tuff call.
