GoDaddy horror stories

I've been reading here and elsewhere about godaddy being a bad registrar. Please tell me if you have any horror stories. I have over 500 domains with them and want to know if it's time to move them over to other registrars Im using.

thanks.

AGF 08-11-2004 04:59 AM

I have not had any problems with them at all, and I have been using them for a long time now, allways good support if there is any problems.

Living For Today 08-11-2004 05:00 AM

Ive been using them for a while and no problems yet. Good support.

pxxx 08-11-2004 05:00 AM

yes, i agree. I can call and talk to a live person at 3am if I need to. great support and free tools, free lock, easy to transfer to other accounts, etc. but I thought that maybe they were going downhill or perhaps they allow hijackers easy access. just curious.

xclusive 08-11-2004 05:03 AM

Honestly you always hear about godaddy horror stories yet it's usually a friend of a friends uncles barber sort of thing. I use them a lot and never had a problem...

slapass 08-11-2004 05:04 AM

I had some serious issues trying to buy domains with them. They refunded me some money as they goofed it up but hard to argue with the way they handled it once they knew they had an issue.

Groove 08-11-2004 05:05 AM

I've used Godaddy for a couple of years for about 50 domains and haven't had a single problem. However the numerous horror stories may prompt me to move my primary domains elsewhere as a precautionary measure.

isnt this at your own expense though? I know its pennies, but kinda weird that a big company like godaddy doesnt have a toll free number.

gxer 08-11-2004 05:31 AM

i have 1 but very horrible story with them.
few months ago i was proud owner of
xxxpics.com with them
..

..

for the one day only ! :)
I got an email from them that i bought this expired name by mistake bla-bla .
I bought it with their drop service.
I got a refund , but you know ... 8,95 is not a price for this domain :)
But i still have about 50-60 domains with them , but i'll never use their backorder service again
:1orglaugh

soukee 08-11-2004 05:37 AM

... I have heard about problems with changing DNS and redirecting.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It isnt my own experience!

Brujah 08-11-2004 05:39 AM

I've heard the horror stories about them disabling domains, charging spam report fees, etc. Like PayPal though, you'll probably think it won't happen to you and stick with them until it does happen to you. Then there'll be a new horror story to read. :)

Enom based registrars/resellers are my favorite by far.

KRL 08-11-2004 05:48 AM

I use 3 primary and 2 secondary registrars just to spread things around a bit.

Been with GoDaddy for a long time. Haven't had any problems.

I do have to qualify the fact that since I have a large portfolio with them they assigned me my own customer service rep. Not sure if everyone gets one of those or not, but it makes things much easier when you have someone you can instantly reach and will handle things for you.

pxxx 08-11-2004 05:50 AM

I think i have one but its going to take five minutes to think of it.

cayne 08-11-2004 05:50 AM

I heard, that they shut down accounts and want money to reactivate them...and they are not very cheap.

www.namecheap.com is cheaper and better.

hydro 08-11-2004 05:52 AM

godaddy is funny, i used to use them for mailing and a domain would get suspended so they said pay $100 and we won't shut it down

yes. but with my mobile plan i get unlimited nationwide calls after 9pm. :) it's nice to know they are working around the clock.

Mr Dickovitch 08-11-2004 06:14 AM

I logged into my Godaddy account to find my domain was gone. I called them on the phone and they said it was a problem they knew about and it then appeared back in my account. I guess that's good customer service, but what if I had not noticed for a long time and never called?
I moved all my domains to register.com just to be safe.

yes, the name did drop and it went for nearly $30K at pool.com

interesting story though. I do know sometimes it will tell me that a dropping/dropped name is available when I try to back order i thru godaddy/blue razor

i don't spam, so I'm not worried, but disabling domains is scary. do you mean they cancel the registration? or turn off the dns?

hmmm... interesting. but I've heard ppl complain about activation costs for domains at their bluerazor (godaddy bulk) service. but shutting down accts scares me.

Repetitive Monkey 08-11-2004 06:35 AM

We sold a referrer "spamming" script that as an example of a custom User-Agent had our domain in it. Unfortunately many people forgot or didn't care to change it, and so when they referrer spammed, our domain ended up all over Google in people's User-Agent stats (keep in mind that we didn't know of this before our domain was yanked).

Not long after, GoDaddy unplugged us for "spam," and we were given no chance of explaining to them what had transcribed. The domain that we owned and had built up for months (all legitimately) was now theirs.

Jakke PNG 08-11-2004 06:42 AM

I have a bit over 50 domains there, no problems whatsoever.

However I've heard horror stuff from people who do (legit) mailings.. hence we got a mailing domain from another place.. just to be sure.

Legit or not doesn't matter. If they get a complaint, they'll yank you without looking into it, and then deny you the right to appeal. So what you did was a wise move.

MickeyG 08-11-2004 07:00 AM

yup they have yanked a few of my domains for mailing. However I was able to get them back by providing opt-in records.

Still I refuse to use them in the future.. to me its none of their business what I do with my domains.

Easton 08-11-2004 07:48 AM

godaddy are 10 mins down the street from us :)

i can always stop in the office in person if i have an issue, but haven't any so far

AcidMax 08-11-2004 08:57 AM

GoDaddy could give a shit less if anything ever happens to your domain. I had one of my good domains hijacked from their system. I have invoices showing I purchased it, screenshots of the domain showing the pending move to another persons acct and called minutes after the move. When I called them they said they couldnt do anything without a court order even though I AM the owner it was taken from my acct, I have screenshots and information etc.

The guy who hijacked my domain has hijacked at least 50 other domains from GoDaddy from people I have spoken too. After a few years of people being screwed finally people are taking action and have tracked this asshole down. He is currently being tracked by investigators and will hopefully be in a Canadian prison very soon.

My suggestion is move your domains from GoDaddy, they are OK until you get fucked over by some prick who decides he wants your domain , then they could give a shit less.

DarkJedi 08-11-2004 08:59 AM

i didnt have any problems with them, but still moved all my domains away from them (gfy crew said it was the right thing to do)

scooby doo as scooby does 08-11-2004 09:29 AM

I lost one of my sites domains when there database got corrupted and the site details were mixed in with this Polish ladies. Despite me actually getting the renewal notice (it was up for renewal), and them still having the last renewal notice on file with my details on it, and there database showing me as the registered owner, and me faxing all the documents they requested, because the domain came up on her list and not mine due to their fucked database, they did nothing, and she, not surprizingly seeing as an unknown porn site had just popped into her list of domains, cancelled it. At that point they smiled nicely as some vulture picked it up on the drop as they, quote: 'could do nothing'. Fuckers.

It's like cheap hosting. Everything looks, sounds and feels fine until..... Fuck! A large pointed object is shoved up yer arse.

this has happened to me too but at another registrar who says they are aggressively :1orglaugh going to get it back for me. i won't mention their name for fear that many security holes remain. Some guys from korea hijacked it. i threatened to take my portfolio elsewhere if they don't retrieve it asap. fortunately the koreans hijakced it and put it into mydomain.com so there may be a good chance I'll get it back quickly. if not, i will have my legal talk to their legal and...

sad to hear that it's happening so often now. whether or not your domain is LOCKED, they will still find a way.

Namecheap
? FREE URL Forwarding/Framing with no ads
? FREE Domain Parking (Coming Soon) Page
? FREE E-mail Forwarding ([email protected])
? FREE Dynamic DNS
? FREE Transfers
? FREE Full Control over your domain
? FREE Change of ownership
? FREE Security features prevents hijacking
? Your Information will be visible in WHOIS

your info is visible in Whois is one reason why I wouldn't use namecheap.

I don't need unexpected visits from "looney tunes"

the first and second things I look for is hide the Whois and Lock the domain so it is harder to steal.

Last I checked namecheap had a free whois guard with every domain purchased. So if that is still in affect , your whois information would not be public.

sumphatpimp 08-11-2004 10:46 AM

then I stand corrected

Sly_RJ 08-11-2004 10:55 AM

I have about 200 domains with GoDaddy. I'll buy another 50 and then start up an account with another registrar.

What other registrars are good and under $10 a piece? I've previously used 000domains.com and love their customer support, but at $13.50 per domain the extra costs really rack up quickly when you're buying large amounts.

yeah I made the same thread some weeks ago. Sad that the "search-function" doesn't work. In that thread many ppl complained about the policies of godaddy.

TheWildcard 08-11-2004 11:28 AM

They stole 2 domains from me.

RicardoB 08-11-2004 12:44 PM

They have been scamming for so long everybody that uses em still deserves everything they get! :ak47:

LoriAnderson 08-11-2004 01:06 PM

I use them on many of my domains and never had a problem "knock on wood"

:)

do you have a personal sales rep assigned to you yet.

once i hit 200 domains they assigned a personal rep to me
i had many of the same problems other people have had however my domains did not get locked. (someone spoofing my domain to spam etc)

the worst that happened is got a personal phone call informing me of the complaint against me for spam and once i explained that i didn't do it and i forwarded on of the bounce messages i had recieve that included the header information they cleared the complaint and tracked down the spammer for me complaining to his isp.

once you have a personal sales rep you are golden

if you don't you are treated like the herd.

SetTheWorldonFire 08-11-2004 01:15 PM

If you have to use support then you have a problem with a domain, correct?

I lost a domain at godaddy before.

FUCK THEM!

Mr. Mike 08-11-2004 01:33 PM

2 years now no problems at all!

Vitasoy 08-11-2004 02:13 PM

I have quite a few with them but I like to diversify and spread them across registers just to be safe. :)

Sylver7 08-11-2004 02:50 PM

I have about 70 domains with them and they have been nothing but helpful and professional. Most complaints come from spammers because godaddy actually has the balls to pull their domains from them.

yes, i have a rep. wish they could let me use the same rep for godaddy & blue razor plus my reps keep getting demoted or they keep trading me to a higher up... but that usually means more sales calls/emails.
