Bill Gates on how to get ahead

I got this today in my e-mail,funny but true shit.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To anyone with kids of any age, or anyone who has ever been a kid, here's some advice Bill Gates recently dished out at a high school speech about 11 things they did not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good politically correct teachings created a full generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the
real world.

Rule 1:
Life is not fair -- get used to it.
Rule 2:
The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone, until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping - they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

i agree with everything but 3 and 4. Im my own boss and was earning at least 40,000 a year while still high school. Too bad i pissed most of it away but i learned quickly the vlaue of a dollar. I can't really imagine working for somebody else now, this industry and the spam industry spoiled me and i will answer to nobody!!!

except mom

:1orglaugh True.
The 'nerds' I knew when I was 10 or so are now highly educated people ready to be the school bullys boss, that is if the bully isn't enjoying being unemployed, or in jail. lol. :)

Jakke PNG 08-11-2004 03:15 AM

..granted, I was sort of a bully and doing quite fine. Except to the people who don't know me well.. they just think I sit at home all day playing playstation and surfing porn. To people that don't know me well I'm a failure and surely I'm being laughed at by them. I kinda like that. :)

Is this old ? No one calls them car phones anymore :1orglaugh I remember when it was cool to have one of those squiggly antennas on your car.

Nice list of "rules" :thumbsup

But I seriously doubt they're Bill's pearls of wisdom. There are zillions of such lists circulating online and attributed to famous people such as the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, etc, but most are fake.

True, if you screw up it's normally your fault, you need someone to blame, look in the mirror.

Agree, but I'd say it was a list from God himself if I thought it would make one bit of difference to some of the assholes I've met recently. The advice is sound.

slackologist 08-11-2004 04:25 AM

Nice one :-)

Firehorse 08-11-2004 04:50 PM

I have seen similar list attributed to many people. Still it's great advice! :thumbsup

NoCarrier 08-11-2004 04:51 PM

Damn.. Thanks for the memories.. I think I read that for the first time in 94..

RicardoB 08-11-2004 04:54 PM
