Is there a way to find out how many times a specific keyword has been entered in a google search for a particular time frame?

I dont think that can happen, but im not sure.

someone in this thread did it, but not sure if its how many sites have that keyword or how many visits

You can do it by depositing $5 in a Google Adwords account - then setting up a fake ad and using their keyword tool - it will show how many click on the keywords they expect for the ad - then figure its many times that amount for the real SERPs - or somewhere near there - it can be much more but it will give you a relative list of keywords broken down by traffic %
