Starting a business witha friend - good idea or bad?

Any thoughts on the subject?

SmutGiant 08-09-2004 02:36 PM

:warning bad idea :warning

EscortBiz 08-09-2004 02:36 PM

in most cases bad idea

try to see what it takes for you to do it yourself

axelcat 08-09-2004 02:37 PM

very bad idea rather do it with a stranger

buddyjuf 08-09-2004 02:37 PM

how long have you known your "friend" ?

NoCarrier 08-09-2004 02:37 PM

Usually mixing money and friends isn't a very good idea. But yes, it can work.

WiredGuy 08-09-2004 02:38 PM

I hate to say this, but the worst idea in the world. You enter into a partnership when you both NEED each other, not because you're friends. It's easier and often times better to just hire him or let him hire you to work for the other unless you need each other to accomplish your goals.

I have tried to start businesses with several friends and it has never worked out. Once the money starts coming in people change and normally not for the good. If you can do it on your own you should try it alone.

If you must have a partner make sure every little detail about the partnership is in writing so you will cover your ass if it starts to fall apart.

IMHO

Sly_RJ 08-09-2004 02:43 PM

I'll say this... I've hired friends before and have since learned my lesson. A partnership with friends? Ahaha!

Very bad idea. I learned the hard way, but I'll never make that mistake again.

pxxx 08-09-2004 02:45 PM

I think it's a good idea if you no them for a long time.

The Other Sweetie 08-09-2004 02:47 PM

If you value your friendship, don't do it. If you want to see your friendship turn to shit rather quickly, go for it.

I've also learned that the hard way. Never, ever again.

marzzo 08-09-2004 02:48 PM

I learned that the hard way, just stay friends because if you bring money into the relationship either the business will fail or your friendship will.

That's just my personal experience and opinion though :)

lisaLuvsbeer 08-09-2004 02:50 PM

good idea

lisaLuvsbeer 08-09-2004 02:51 PM

I teamed up with a high school friend we werent very close until recently became neighboor...partnership working out good!
:thumbsup

TurboTrucker 08-09-2004 02:57 PM

Starting a business with ANYBODY else is a bad idea.

Webcam Guru 08-09-2004 03:17 PM

D.O.N.T D.O I.T <-----You've been warned!

detoxed 08-09-2004 03:21 PM

It really depends on what the business is, and what you know about that persons work ethic.

Never do business with nor live with family members or friends.

Serge Litehead 08-09-2004 03:22 PM

99% bad idea

Polak 08-09-2004 03:27 PM

Best idea to work with family.

Goatse 08-09-2004 03:29 PM

It can work if you both define your roles clearly and if you both have the ability to communicate effectively. :2 cents:

bdld 08-09-2004 03:35 PM

an extremely horrible idea. dont mix friends with business, period.

:1orglaugh that's even worse than friends

stick to solo unless he has a boatload of cash to get things rolling or excellent skills you don't have

MiSsBeHeaDReSs 08-09-2004 04:28 PM

Only if you have the utmost trust in him/her.
Otherwise, bad idea.
Although, ive been in business with a friend for a while now and it works out wonderfully.:2 cents:

Doctor Dre 08-09-2004 06:20 PM

WRONG ...

The only thing it can do is pretty much hurt your friendship .

I trust my friend 100 % ... I trusted him with 15 k cash b4 .

But I wouldn't do a long term bizz with him

RobD 08-09-2004 06:26 PM

not a good idea, if you do it make sure everything is clear and signed :2 cents:

Lace 08-09-2004 06:32 PM

keep it professional and have partnership papers drawn up. if both of you can truly seperate money and friendship then fine, but if not things could get nasty.

Theo 08-09-2004 07:34 PM

It's unfair to say don't start a business with a friend. If your friend qualifies for being your partner it's a more preferable choice over someone unknown.

PrivateEye 08-09-2004 07:38 PM

I went into business with a friend.....

And it ended bad....real bad

Vitasoy 08-09-2004 07:39 PM

I think it's a bad idea.

Spunky 08-09-2004 07:41 PM

Never works out...Wind up lossing the friendship and the business if things go wrong.
