What do you think about older Porsches?

What do you guys think about the older Porsche models (911, 912, 914, 944, etc.) from the '60s-'70s? I'm in the market to purchase a car for my teenage son, and he's looking at a 1967 Porsche 912, does anyone have any experience/opinions about this car?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Wouldn't be better if he would buy his first porsche with money earned from his work? :)

Back to the question: 912 has an 100HPs engine....and it's full of problems. The older the model, the worse. I would prefer a 944 over a 912. Much more reliable.

My dad had an older Porche 911 hard top convertable. It was pretty nice, but seemed to be easy to break into and steal, and it happened a lot.

Alarms where not that advanced at the time though.

Classic. James Dean drove one.

I am not a fan of the 912 but if the one he's looking at has a factory sunroof, it could be worth something. There's less than 50 known to exist.

The 912 Targa top is pretty cool though.

Got any specs on the model he's looking at ?

Believe me, I'm all for hard work, and I raise the same values in my children that I had (Well, for the most part). But, I made a deal with my son... he puts away his money for college, and I'd buy him a car of his choice.

Thanks for the help btw.

cornhusker 08-09-2004 01:15 AM

I'll try and grab the specs from him, as soon as he wakes up. As far as I know he hasn't set his eyes on one specific car, rather than a model. Right now he's browsing the older Porsches and Mustangs, as he takes after his dad, and is an old classics lover.

IF there's one thing you need to learn... It's that kids who's parents buy them cars, are always the same kids who kill themselves doing 150 mph on a 2 lane country road.

If you buy it for him, he wont respect it and will treat it accordingly. It happens all the time here, kids parents buy him M5, he races a guy at a light, looses control at 200 kmh after being clipped going through a red light, and runs over a pedestrian.

Don't contribute to the madness :(

Goatse 08-09-2004 04:03 AM

They cost an arm and a leg to maintain. I knew a guy who had an old 928 and he said it cost him more than $1 per mile to maintain. :2 cents:

xclusive 08-09-2004 04:21 AM

a 1967 Porsche 912 is an ok car but there are a lot better make sure your son thinks hard before picking...

strobi 08-09-2004 04:25 AM

I would never buy a classic car as my only main car. Too expensive to maintain and drive. Get him regular one instead.

Awesome car!

Old Porsches are so classy! I love them

Lykos 08-09-2004 06:00 AM

Only 911...

Mack 08-09-2004 06:15 AM

Find a nice 944/951 87 or newer and be done with it. Pretty reliable, and if you have any mechanical sense you can take care of the little things easily.

Great cars as I have had one for years.

They are not impressive enough to put the super auto studs on GFY in a state of aww but very good cars , and he would be happy with this.

Minte 08-09-2004 07:41 AM

I'd suggest the 944 as well,It won't destroy your wallet in maintenance costs and it's a nice driving car.

Actually when we were younger we could have killed ourselves in car many times ... many many times .

But it's just the way it is ... even if you tell your kid 100000000000000 time to go slow it won't change nothing .

And having his own car, if it's a 1000-2000 $ car, won't change much

Doctor Dre 08-09-2004 08:06 AM

One thing for sure : Your son got some really good taste for cars :) I'm glad he didn't ask you for a hyunday accent or something
