New found respect for "God" and "Religion" (Long Story)

looking at THIS OLD THREAD you will quickly determine that i have little to no beleif in such nonsense.

HOWEVER, i just recently visited an uncle who is 45 and in his death bed. It was only months ago we last saw him at a family barbeque, we all knew he was fighting cancer, and the doctors predicted no more than a year left, he looked very pale and lost all kinds of weight when we saw him at that party.

So he has been in and out of the hospital, but just the other day we got a call saying that it is just about over, and we should come and say our goodbye's

When we got there it looked like there was no life left in him, he was VERY frail and he was slurring his words, but he knew exactly what was going on and he knew what he was saying, that much was apparent.

It didnt take much more than a minute to realize that every other word out of his mouth was about God! All kinds of stuff like "god bless ..." and "god knows ...." and "god has plans ..." etc.

At first it was annoying, but then i realized ... this god stuff was allowing him to accept the fact that he was moving on! And much more than that, he was using it to somewhat comfort us in the fact that he is about to leave us!

So i admit, i may not be a beleiver or i may not practice my religion, but this little incident had a serious impact on me! I realize that without religion, he would be nothing more than a little old man sitting in his last moments alone, nothing more to say other than goodbye.

God put a smile on his face in his last moments. Religion and/or Faith has givin him something to look forward to. It has shown him a bright side of a VERY dark situation.

I mean this poor guy is in his death bed, the doctors said his body is currently drowning itself from within with fluids, only a few hours or a day tops to live and he is as happy as can be! Unbeleivable!

I dont know how to explain the conclusion i took from all of this, but i hope my story has touched someone.

sorry for the long story ...

When I'm dying, hold the god bullshit and give me more morphine!

Once you die you only bring memories with you.. If he is peaceful that's because he accepted his death and having his family around him helps him a lot.. I can't imagine dying lonely..

blind faith is alot to ask of us all-knowing humans. but when we take a second to stop and humble ourselves, its at that point we realize that there is something greater than us.

I was REALLY hoping that we wouldn't have a God/religion thread on GFY today. Religion offers great hope to people in deep crisis and for that reason alone it has value. Someone once said, "I never want to see another atheist die." If it can give peace to someone and take away his/her fear at the hour of death, who are we to slam it? And then there's always the chance you could be wrong, lil2rich4u2.

Drugs won't take away the fear. There's no such thing as an athiest in a foxhole. When that moment comes, I bet you that a lot of athiests suddenly find God.

at least he has a slow peaceful death. That has great value

Peaceful? yes. Slow? I'm not too sure. I'd rather go quick.

BTW, 45 is WAAAAY too young. What kind of cancer did he have?

TheLegacy 08-08-2004 09:30 PM

I have had several family members die of cancer - my sister 24 and even recently my mom - all had a belief in god and faced death with a peace that few have.

its best not to confuse God with religion - then you can understand why he is dying the way he is.

24? That is far too young. :(

You think? Take all the drugs you want. I guarentee you'll be a basket case on your death bed.

Are you so sure that you aren't fooling YOURSELF?

I'm not afraid of death and I'm not suddenly going to believe in fairy tales to make myself feel better on my death bed.

Only a coward needs a god when it's time to face the end.

That's because atheists know the true value of life.

You'll never find an atheist suicide bomber either! :1orglaugh
