Question regarding some cable companies and broadband internet
 

Do some of them especially Adelphia Cable do something were as only one computer can be connected ie: so you dont network your house ans stuff?

This past weekend in Buffalo i just plugged into my friends connection and no matter what we did we couldnt surf. We had a connection but not able to surf

so you plugged into your router? or you plugged into your computers connection, with your computer unplugged?

Yes - in DOCSIS spec there is a flag you can turn on with a specific OID to only allow for X number of computers (the MSO specifies X). People are ramping up for CableHome + DOCSIS it seems.

were you pluged into a router or directly into the modem?

If directly into the modem, try rebooting the modem when you switch PC's. My modem is through BrighHouse/ Time Warner and they bind the modem to the mac address. So you have to reboot the modem if you switch PC's.

nah we unplugged his pc and connected my laptop directly to it . no router or anything.

Im glad Charter doesn't do that and limit the ammount of connections...

Most MSO's track DHCP logs into a database. If they have the OID Flag turned on to limit the PC #, then you'd need to get the original PC to do a ipconfig/release first so that the database clears, then re-try your PC.

charter is about to offer a new modem that has a wireless router built in. so I dont think they will be going this route anytime soon.

yea, if it works the same way there as it dose here.. if you swap PC's with out rebooting the modem, it won't ever pull an IP and surf.

It's just a matter of time - MSO's are continuously planning the move from DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 to 2.0 and CableHome spec.

they have those here, a Linksy modem/ wireless router combo. Work pretty good, but not worth the extra charge every month.. You're better off buying a router and saving the extra $10-$15 bucks they want to charge per PC.

If it's anything like the SMC8013-RG, then that's the whole reason they're offering it. The new RG's have the router & switches built into them, in addition to having a firmware that supports DOCSIS 2.0 and CableHome 1.0 :2 cents:
