Do you use Plesk control panel?
It makes managing your own server a whole lot easier. So you don't have to be a BSD or Linux wiz to get your own server online. You don't even have to understand Apache or BIND for name servering.
Are you sticking to shared hosting cause you're afraid to manage the server yourself? |
Wonder how many are going; What the fuck is he talking about?
|
well i think works cool, but doesnt have a nice interface, i think 4 somebody who looks 4 a pretty cool interface cpanel (bluealagoon) will be better
|
If you don't have a clue about *nix get a managed server you can't secure anything with those panels, you need to use ssh and do it yourself so if you don't have a clue don't get an unmanaged server otherwise you'll get hacked sooner or later or you just won't know what to do when you get into problems.

This is gonna sound lame but ... I use windows servers ... Actually not on every projects but my programmers are all doing ASP.net .
And I got people to take care of my shit if needed anyways so I never tried a dedicated host with a CP . |
it works fairly well for me, It made setting up the last 20 sites a breeze compared to our old outa date raq 4s (hated them) and their lame ass admin panels.
|
Haven't given cpanel a try yet. I have been using Plesk for years and am confortable with it. It took awhile to learn how to get scripts working and where everything is .
Have a number of databases. How hard would it be to migrate now?? |

Another solution is to use a CP like Plesk and then hire a guru to secure your server. Would that work? The other thing about managed servers is everytime you want to do something, ya got to get help. Like add a domain or darabase... |

www.freebooble.com runs on a windows server as well ...
But honestly I would not host a REALLY big tgp on a win server . |
Im not a huge techy so I like using Plesk. A lot of the hosts I have used are switching from Plesk to Cpanel though.

You pay for a more or less good admin who takes care of a firewall load management, updates and configurations. Firewalls on the servers?Which company? You need to add ports yourself otherwise a firewall would be useless and how should you do that without even knowing how to use ssh, using pico or restarting running applications. The only useful thing atm is EV1 ddos protection system, but it doesn't have anything to do with firewalls. You obviously have no clue what a normal managed server is.You can use your panel like everywhere else beside you don't have to take care about security, configurations updates and installations which you obviously don't do anyway because you just use the admin panel. |

That?s why I?m hitting the books, have a Linux box on my local net. You just can?t learn BIND, Linux, Apache, PHP, MySQL and best security practices in a couple days. |

I'd have to set a new server up and migrate a site at a time. Some would go easy and some wouldn't. |
