What´s up with easypic?

TGP easypic asks its visitors for donation:
"But right now we need your help to survive and stay free."

Is this a joke?!

wolfshade 05-08-2001 03:10 AM

They were trying to go paid listings only.

It's biting them back.

I stated it time and time again

THAT POLICY DOESN'T WORK! you can offer toplistings for a fee but not to go all paid listings.

TGP's depend to much on small webmasters that can't afford it for that.

My advice to easy pic: let me run it for a week and they will be on top of things again http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/biggrin.gif

I still get some nice traffic from easypic every day, without paying http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif

Hey don't get me wrong,

Easy pic is one of the best TGP's out there IMHO, they just did what I warned about in the Superchicken thread.

They jumped on the bandwagon and what I predicted happened.

It's a typicall human follow the leader type of thing everybody turns to the right so the sheep will follow.

People shouldlearn to think for themselves the online biz is no rocket science, but it does require some thought.

The more I read about stuff like this the more I think I should start a webmaster workshop *LOL*

Well I wish them good luck with it, and I hope that they make a lot of money.

Some people refer to "greed", and that is fine. But we're in this biz to make money, and some people forget that. As crazy as it sounds, it is actually a good idea, and regardless of whether it's the truth, he has a lot of balls for asking. He isn't cheating anyone, and isn't demanding anything. This is just the same as Tommy's Bookmarks and his search engine referrer configuration.

Good luck to them both.

nout wrong with that, ya might just get lucky and make some extra $'s.

I highly disagree with it for a couple of reasons;

1. TGPs exchange traffic for galleries.
2. If surfers pay to see our galleries = why would they sign up on our sponsors?
3. this is no different than charging a membership.

Why the hell should I supply the bandwidth and the content so he gets a monthly membership fee from his surfers - Thats Stupid! If Content Providers worked this way they would all be Broke!!!

My $.02

Warphead 05-08-2001 04:25 PM

I don't think so, I think Easypic is taking the whole "please click my banners to keep my site free" shtick to the next level.

They aren't charging people, they're asking for donations.

I'd love to know how much they're making.

Rob Roy 05-08-2001 09:43 PM

Do you really mean that surfers are being asked to donate?? Amazing. Nothing against Easy Pic (in fact, they're one of my favorite TGPs), but --why would a surfer make a donation to a TGP?? Get real. Let's see -- instead of sending money, perhaps I could just get the same thing for free. Duh. Asking for donations never works. Are you sure this isn't a joke of some kind? Or perhaps there is some other purpose.

This is actually quite different from the "please click my sponsor to keep the site free" kind of thing. Clicking a sponsor doesn't cost anything. Making a donation, by definition, does cost money.

Maybe someone could organize a pool in which we take bets on the number of people who donate. I take zero.

tradermcduck 05-09-2001 01:18 AM

I love to bet...

One donation every month.
