Why do I have so much 404 traffic?

2k a day of 404 traffic seems really steep. WTF are they doing as I never remove pages or do any of the things people do to make 404 traffic.

This is non paysites so it is not people looking for memebers areas.

Lycanthrope 07-30-2004 05:06 PM

I'll take it if you don't want it.

freeadultcontent 07-30-2004 05:07 PM

Why are you complaining or even questioning free traffic?

Fabuleux 07-30-2004 05:09 PM

Analyze where it is coming from...

I notice the same thing, and in my instance it was crawlers looking for robots.txt, which I don't have. Also, I think that MSIE looks for favorite.ico when it hits your site, and if it isn't there that counts as a 404 as well. :2 cents:

no, you are wrong.. MSIE looks for favorite.ico only when you have favicon tag in page source

StarkReality 07-30-2004 05:43 PM

I get a bunch of 404 traffic from freesites and galleries, nothing ever deleted, but if you have URLs like anal/free01/index1.html many surfers seem to try to play with the numbers to find more free porn :321GFY

I always make sure that there isn't a 02 after a 01, a 05 maybe, then a 11, don't let them figure out a way to find more for free :winkwink:

Nope, when someone bookmarks the site IE looks if there is a favicon.ico.
When you upload an icon (I think Apache) sends it automatically to the browser when the page is loaded.

I only get that many uniques a day. Give me your 404's and my traffic will double! :winkwink:

Turboface 07-30-2004 07:16 PM

You could send your 404 traffic to my click-thru program, Impure Thoughts.

:winkwink:

beemk 07-30-2004 07:18 PM

Good article and it points out that this is real 404 traffic as I am using the uniques at AFF.

slapass 07-30-2004 10:30 PM
