This has nothing to do with freedom, so don't be an asshole. Most subways have no food rules. This probably has been in effect here for some time now. She broke the law and was properly detained.

Yeah...it seems a bit over the top, but that's life with laws :Graucho

cool1 07-30-2004 08:31 AM

I think the transit police officer went a little to far in this.
They were just being bullies

Marcus Aurelius 07-30-2004 08:32 AM

powertripping plain and simple.

hova 07-30-2004 08:34 AM

Just like in all the countries America hates

Tala 07-30-2004 08:35 AM

Oh for fuck's sake.

Her response would have been the same as mine. "Don't you have other crimes to be taking care of?"

Welcome to America. Land of BUllSHit and complete idiocy.

xclusive 07-30-2004 08:36 AM

That should be a nice lawsuit.... They went way too far and I don't think that any Jury wouldn't see this as an abuse of power.

BRISK 07-30-2004 08:38 AM

WRONG!!! it has EVERYTHING to do with freedom numb nuts. Thats what LAWS do... restrict your freedom! Think about it.... she was arrested and handcuffed for having candy in her mouth at the wrong spot on the planet.

No...the law in place here was not put in place to restrict freedom. It was most likely put in place to protect the subway system and passengers. She broke the law and was caught. Plain and simple.

Don't make this out to be something more than it is. If you want to bitch about laws and freedom, talk about the people who were arrested recently for wearing Anti-Bush tshirts at a recent Bush rally.

So NOW having CANDY in your mouth is putting other peoples lives in jeopardy? MY GOD, I can see the head lines now:

"Man killed when woman spits candy at him, piercing his heart and killing him instantly"

What the hell??? We have killers walking our streets, terrorists, and god only knows what else and they focus on a woman having a snack in the wrong place? It isn't like she was smoking or chewing on knives, she was eating a piece of CANDY!!!!! Yikes, glad YOU aren't our leader, we'd ALL be behind bars........ :1orglaugh

We'd ALL be behind bars....... but not CANDY bars..... LMAO

Metrorail has been criticized in the past for heavy-handed enforcement of the eating ban. In 2000, a police officer handcuffed a 12-year-old girl for eating a French fry on a subway platform.

In 2002, one of their officers ticketed a wheelchair-bound cerebral palsy patient for cursing when he was unable to find a working elevator to leave a station. Unflattering publicity eventually led the police to void the ticket.

wow.

btw, if you read the story, it was her comment that lead to the request for her I.D. and subsequent frisking and handcuffing..
Really sad.

Fletch XXX 07-30-2004 09:13 AM

why do they lie and say she didnt stop eating when they admit she finished it in elevator?

I've been on Subway systems all over the world. Most, if not all, have this same rule. No eating or drinking on the platform or trains. There's a reason for this, and it's not because they can just arrest people and make some money off of them. It's to protect the trains, the system and the passengers.

I'm going to guess that you've never ridden a crowded NYC subway. Someone eating is not paying attention to the what is going on around them, and could easily fall causing comotion and/or injury to themselves or others around them. This is where these laws come from.

Yes, it's pretty stupid that she was arrested for eating a candybar. But...she did break a law. This law is just like the one on the books regarding people using cell phones while driving. All this lady had to do was accept that she was wrong and take the fine. Instead she chose to mouth off and was arrested.

I like this part of the article:

She wasnt arrested for eating a candybar. Read the first paragraph again, lol..

Your last sentance is closer to the truth. She made a comment that they didnt like, they asked her for her I.D., she kept on walking and was then frisked and handcuffed.

Tom_PMs 07-30-2004 09:27 AM

Willett said she was eating a PayDay bar on an escalator descending into a station July 16 when an officer warned her to finish it before entering the station. Both Willett and police agree that she nodded and put the last bit into her mouth before throwing the wrapper into a trash can.

AdultNex 07-30-2004 09:28 AM

In Taiwan, if you are caught with eating food or drinking any type of liquid on a subway transit-- You are fined about $300.

From what I gather, she broke the law. They were giving her a ticket and she mouthed of and refused to stop and give her ID. Perhaps I'm wrong, but either way she was in the wrong in the situation.

Fletch XXX 07-30-2004 09:29 AM

no eating on subway?

shit, come see our metro, you can eat burritos, pizza, any day thing you want.

:1orglaugh

you nazis are TOLD WHEN AND WHERE TO EAT.

not us.

Tam 07-30-2004 09:29 AM

No I haven't, never ben in a Subway in my life, but that is beside the point....... and YOU obviously, didn't read this article.. it SAYS:

Quote:

Stephanie Willett said she was eating a PayDay bar on an escalator descending into a station July 16 when an officer warned her to finish it before entering the station. Both Willett and police agree that she nodded and put the last bit into her mouth before throwing the wrapper into a trash can.
Since when is an escalator a platform and they even admitted when they asked her to finish it BEFORE she got down there, she put the last bit of it in her mouth and threw the paper away, so she did as they said and she STILL got arrested.

I am all about following the rules and so on, but this is a tad bit out of line, and I don't remember ever seeing anyone eating a CANDY bar that was so into it that they caused a huge fall and endangered peoples lives. If she was sitting in the middle of the floor having a full on dinner or something, yeah, trip hazards and all of that jazz...... but come on, she was FINISHING a candybar... and by their own admission, she was alert enough while eating it that she heard what they said and DID what they said....

Either way, arresting someone for something so stupid when there were probably 50 people more dangerous than her within 100 feet of her, is pretty stupid.... if they were SO worried about

Washington has been under heightened security because of the continuing threat of terrorism. And last week, police declared a citywide crime emergency over rising juvenile crime.
then why in the hell were they SOOOOOO all consumed by a 45 year old woman popping the last bite of a candybar in her mouth for god's sake? LMAO

I do what I want where and whenever I want. But if I get caught, I don't bitch and complain.

I was proud to accept my ticket and appear in court when I was caught smoking a joint in the park a few years back.

We've got rules and laws. You're free to abide or not. But...you can't bitch when shit goes down.

From the way it looks to me, she did exactly as they said to do and THEY went on to harrass her further, they even said she did as they said..... so why the hell would they even be trying to give her a ticket? LOL

I can see even fining someone eating where they weren't supposed to, but not when she did as they said to do...... she finished it and threw the paper away, not even throwing it in the floor, she threw it in the trash.... LOL

Bottom line...... somewhere, somehow, our people have become petty and this is perfect example of it. That and ticketing someone in the wheelchair because he couldn't find a way out of their Subway? Good grief... :helpme

I didn't get arrested for that either. NY is pretty lax on the good weed, so long as you're no where near a school or children and aren't carrying a half a pound on you.

I got a ticket, which was on the level of parking ticket. I showed up and paid my fine. (I don't think we can mail in our tickets here in NYS)

I'm just fanning the flames here man. You know all about that. I think this rule/law is bogus. I had cops too, especially ones who abuse their power.
