No, you wouldn't be able to write a novel. You would be assigned to the garbage collection company, where you would be a garbage man for the rest of your life. If you did well, you might be promoted to middle management - You would live in government assigned housing (a small apartment).

If you did bad you would be transfered up north and would have to pick up garbage on your route in the snow.

I'm wondering if you ever lived in a communist country when it was still communist?

Edit. And please, I remember Romania as a kid, bitches at the counter was exactly a product of communism, as nobody really cared about the economy as a whole, let alone their jobs which were virtually guaranteed. Communism as a dream is nice, but reality is very scary. I lived it, and glad to have left it..

And yes, I live in Moscow.

Russia's economy will need a couple of decades to catch up with Western Europe, obviously. You can't fix 70+ years of mismanagement under Soviet tyranny within a few years.
