Ever thought about becoming a professional poker player?

Anyone here have the balls to just give up what they're doing now and start playing poker professionally?

And I don't mean any of this online bullshit...I'm talking about looking these guys in the eyes with upwards of $300K on the line.

I saw where one guy who plays big cash games won $1.5 mil in 2 days...that's some serious cash.

Marcus Aurelius 07-29-2004 12:40 AM

It would be a blast most certainly, but my poker skills arent polished to even think about something like that. Would definitely be a life altering decision though no doubt.

Horny Dude 07-29-2004 12:41 AM

Not a big gambler! I hate to lose money I could have used else where!

I like to play for fun but with that kinda of money on the line I would die if I lost!

Napolean 07-29-2004 12:41 AM

how could that thought not cross your mind after watching Rounders?

it's fun to play online in the adult poker tour..but that's a far cry from sitting there and deciding to go all in with that Ace King before the flop and have real money on the line...LOL

Very true. when the real money is inches away the dynamics would be alot different I imagine.

robfantasy 07-29-2004 12:46 AM

my dad is a professional poker player...

there is a big difference between what u see on tv (tournement no limit) and playing everyday day in and day out.

when you are playing with your own money you dont play like that.

the big money tournements cost alot to get in, the way it works is you usually have a sponsor who puts up the money and u guys work out a deal on the winnings.

my dad has played with the best

thekebie 07-29-2004 12:48 AM

If I had a ton of money like I sold some dot com like Paul Philips I think I would go into tournament playing, but not cash game playing. Greenstein from Symantec has done the same thing.

Zerof8 07-29-2004 12:49 AM

Yeah i have thought about it. My grandma wants me to,lol, but i like my money too much to lose it all for something like that. They glamourize that shit though, for instance they will show a guy winning a million but they dont talk about how he lost it all in the next week and is now losing his house, everybody has bad luck. I just wouldnt do it because if you look at even the biggest professional poker players they are rarely dressed nice and i can tell by watching the tournament that some of them have some style, so it leaves me with the assumption that they cant afford it:2 cents:

rakeback 07-29-2004 01:31 AM

I am making more money playing poker online than my day job.

I find that it's very boring and tedious.

I keep my job becuase I work for a good friends's father, he is genuinely thankful for my help (website stuff), and he takes care of me.

Poker is nice to have on the side if I wanna make some side money, I dont know if I could do it full time though.

The toll on my body would probably be too much.

xclusive 07-29-2004 01:44 AM

Fuck No! I don't like chance I like being in control of what is happening with my money. But if I could get a sponsor that would be different...

Praguer 07-29-2004 01:48 AM

See sig.

Enter a small buy in tourney for chance to wing big and leave this industry for good:Graucho

Seriously that would be the only realistic way to become pro.

Take Chris Money Maker for example, His total investment was forty dollars, and he won $2,500,000.

After winning his way into the event, he realized it would be difficult to scrape together airfare and hotel costs. His father, and a friend, put up some money to cover the cost for the trip in exchange for a portion of his winnings.

fr8 07-29-2004 01:53 AM

I think about it all the time. Then I play at a Raise/Fold table then I think twice. Need to stay away from those.

Lykos 07-29-2004 03:02 AM

Nope, that's just to risky for me:glugglug

montel 07-29-2004 03:03 AM

the "online bullshit" can make you some serious cash in itself. there are a lot of suckers playing.

But still it's online and no one can watch you for tells or get into your head with talk etc....hence my "online bullshit" statement.

Try to make that same kind of cash looking someone in the eyes at a poker table...different game entirely.

I watched the adult poker tour the other night for the first time it's just come on TV in Australia. Was very entertaining to watch. I've been starting to get into the online poker lately it's quite enjoyable although I don't think I would ever want to rely on it.

hova 07-29-2004 03:40 AM

Thought about yea, ever gonna happen NO.

It's amazing how it's become such a spectator sport.

I have a 12 year old niece that lives with me and she loves to watch it.

We TIVO just about every episode of World Series of Poker, Poker Championship, Celebrity Poker, World Poker Tour so we can all watch it together.

I remember a post here a week or so ago where someone thought PartyPoker was fixed, or something like that.. Then yesterday I found this eBay auction yesterday and was wondering if this guy is a GFYer.

korzon 07-29-2004 09:58 AM

Cash games are totally different dude then tournament play, there is no all ins before the flop, it's all just reads and moves made after the flop. Cash games are very skillfull, a fish will get eaten up in a nl cash game, a limit cash game.. only uses game theory and not as much skill, so if you know game theory and odds, in a limit game you can hold your own for the most part.

Tournament play is TOTALLY different then cash games, it's almost like a different game entirely.

and no I'm not some amateur. I've played with some big names, won a few big online tourneys, and have played live nl games as well as live tournies...

BruceM 07-30-2004 12:58 PM

I'd love to do that, if I had more money to burn.

ytcracker 07-30-2004 01:03 PM

i think i could go pro if i managed my bankroll correctly

right now i just win for fun and do it for extra cash
but im sure if i had to make a living at it id have to screw down a lot more

SleazeQueen 07-30-2004 01:32 PM

I would love to be a professional tourney poker player. Unfortunately I lack funds and poker skills and I think you really need both to be successful. :Graucho
