ebay pisses me off

I hate how canadian sellers sell in US funds, as well, charge 7% tax, in US funds! Bastards. Not to mention, they make a nice profit off shipping.

Suddenly that steal of a deal 10 dollar item becomes 30 dollars.

robfantasy 07-28-2004 09:28 PM

ya and the handling fee people charge

cherrylula 07-28-2004 09:29 PM

yeah ebay is filled with garbage too nowdays.

I managed to get a xbox DVD playback kit for $22.32 USD with 4 day shipping. If it doesn't come within 5 biz days. I will charge back. I paid extra for it. The remote kit would be $50 CAD if bought in stores. So I saved some money here for sure.

Got a Dream Theater DVD for $17.57 USD. Prolly could have gotten it locally for $25 CAD. Just about even, a bit cheaper with ebay. Shipping was 4$ USD. Fucking duty and tax will probably murder me though on this. I requested he mark as gift. If he doesn't. I will chargeback and not accept the package :) If he does mark as gift yet I still get hit with duties and taxes, I will pay for it but curse like a mad man about it.

I am seconds away from winning a 450 watt peak car subwoofer. Bid is $10 USD. Shipping is $14 USD. Plus 7%GST. for a $25.68 total. That's wicked for a fucking subwoofer. I would be paying $50 for a used one locally from a crummy illegal place called "Shaky's". No duties on this item since it's a Canadian seller.

So moral of story is, you only save money by ebaying providing the seller is fair with shipping costs.

They are required to in most cases.

fr8 07-28-2004 09:51 PM

Yeah I know how that is. Couple .01 cent auctions with $20 shipping. But I knew about the shipping before hand.

You are quoting me in the wrong context. I said "I hate how canadian sellers sell in US funds, as well, charge 7% tax, in US funds!"

Point being, They are taxing on a different exchange rate. It may bot add up to much, but it does for larger items.

iwantchixx 07-28-2004 09:53 PM

so people don;t get off base, my point in the thread is as follows

"you only save money by ebaying providing the seller is fair with shipping costs."

A lot of people don't realize this, I have known this since my first item purchased 4 years ago. I find it funny how I see bidders fighintg over a 2 dollar item, that has 40 bux shipping, that can be bought locally for 30 bux, and the listings they bid on are listed as "untested - does not work - for parts only" on items that are unrepairable.

B40 07-28-2004 09:57 PM

Everybody always includes handling in the shipping price. It takes time and money to package the item, drive to the post office, then wait in line...

And of course if an auction is in US funds, why would taxes be charged in Canadian funds?

It's probably true with low value items, you're better off buying it retail, but it's the more expensive items where you save money.

quantum-x 07-28-2004 10:00 PM

I just had a bitch about eBay too.
I fucken HATE how sellers treat it as a fucking hobby.
Ie, I buy something from you, I expect you to

1) Be professional
2) Reply to my emails within 12 hours
3) Send my shit as SOON as payment has gone through.

I DON'T expect you to

1) Treat me like I'm an idiot. How many times have we heard the 'I got a virus' / 'The network was down' / 'I got sick' excuses
2) Overcharge me for the shipping
3) Send the goods at your convinience.

I had some dozey bitch send me 1 DVD, 3 weeks late, charge me $10 for the shipping, when the postmark said 90c, and showed she had lied in her previous emails about when she posted it, and I just had some tosser tell me " I never received the confirmation eMail from Auction Payments but now I check via the Auction Payments web site and I saw that the order was mailed."

Yeah sure asshat, I'm sure you didn't notice my check arrive in the mail.

FAAAAAAAAAARK.

ebay and the people on it, both sellers and buyers can make you either want to kill people or kill yourself.

the tax has to be calculated in the same currency as the auction price. if it's calculated in a different currency, it's not 7%.

7% USD tax on $100 USD = $7 USD = $9.38 CDN (rate of 1.34)
7% CDN tax on $100 USD = $7 CDN = less than 7% of total price.

if you're buying something for $100 USD, 7% of that is $7 USD, no matter what currency you calculate taxes in.

iwantchixx 07-28-2004 10:12 PM

Overall I am pretty satisfied with my ebay experiences aside from the last item I ordered took 6 weeks to get here and I paid for 4 day delivery. She sent me another one 2 weeks into it to make up for it and told me to refuse it if the first one came. The first one came 4 weeks AFTER I got the second one. it was stuck in customs and I had a bill for 30 bux on a 15 dollar item. So i refused it and all ended well.

At least she was willing to correct the problem. It would have been nice to get the shipping fee refunded though.

You're right but I was thinking it was different because the exchange rates on ebay is different than banking rates. However, I just realzied that it doesn't matter as a bank is not involved at any point. Even when the seller moves his paypal money to his bank account, it is done with ebay/paypal exchange rates.

iwantchixx 07-28-2004 11:01 PM

HOLY FUCK. I just got 20 5mm blue LEDs (7000mcd) for 11.85 with shipping and 100 3mm LEDs (4000mcd) for 14.95 with free shipping.

I can sell them for a dollar a pop locally and that would be SAVING people money!

Zerof8 07-29-2004 12:42 AM

Yeah i won an auction two weeks ago for a hard to get dvd. I think the guy is fuckin me over though:( I got one email from him right after i won the auction saying that it would be a while because of customs. I have emailed him since to ask for a trackin number but he never responded. I wouldnt be so concerned but he only had 5 transactions and i was his first sell. I guess it was the five dollar discount i got winning his auction instead of buying it from a website. O well if i get fucked i get fucked, I earned it:1orglaugh

WHOA! 14,000mcd. Put 8 of those in a lantern flashlight and you have something seriously BRIGHT

xclusive 07-29-2004 01:51 AM

No matter what if you don't know the total final price don't bid because it is a legal contract and if they wanted to charge you $1000 shipping on a paperclip they could. I personally charge exact shipping plus %5 handling since gas and time costs me.

We are Ebay PowerSellers and charge exact shipping. Our customers are happy that way and we have people who have done 20 or more tranactions with us each. Keep the customer happy and the will keep coming back! :thumbsup

montel 07-29-2004 02:37 AM

you pay $1 for something and then pay handling fees and postage. before you know it they are billing $30 for a 50 cent mug. be careful

Living For Today 07-29-2004 03:45 AM

If a guestimate is needed for shipping I always send the change back. I really hate it when sellers charge a "handling" fee and classify it as postage and then you look at the cost on the package and see how much extra bling they scrounged off ya.

johnbosh 07-29-2004 03:50 AM

it sucks
