That really makes me feel more insecure about the use of touch screen voting equipment. This is exactly why we need a paper receipt printed on these things.

There is no reason not to add paper verification. It's a bit more expensive, but it'll protect against crashes like this, and it will assure the voter that their vote was accurately counted.
