Bird lovers in Israel have been abuzz over the past few days following the capturing on film of a masked booby - a first in the country. Photographer Itzik Amir, who was documenting an extreme sport event along the Rishon Letzion coast 10 days ago, noticed an unusual bird in flight. After capturing the bird on film, he took the photographs to ornithologist Yehonatan Meirav, who determined it was a masked booby, a fact that was confirmed by other ornithologists. The masked booby usually is found in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and Caribbean. It is extremely rare to find a masked booby in the Mediterranean basin: the last recorded confirmed sighting in the region was 19 years ago in Spain.
