I'm getting audited :(

Anyone ever go through this before? Any advice?

They are auditing me for 2002, I have all my docs and everything together.

Should I be worried about anything?

Depends on how you took care of your business :Graucho

Unless you were purposely trying to evade paying taxes, I wouldn;t worry too much.

First step should be getting yourself a good accountant/tax attorney.

Niteline has been good to you huh :)

Really I cant say much, other than make sure all docs are in order.

If they're coming to your office to do it, make them uncomfortable. Turn the air conditioner off and give them an old stool that's hard as a rock. That way they won't stick around poking in your files too long.

any reason why you think you would be getting audited?

qwe 07-25-2004 06:37 PM

why for 2002 ? isn't it supose to be for 2003 ?

David! 07-25-2004 06:39 PM

I was audited for 2001,2002
I thought they would rip me a new a.hole
turned out they refunded me an extra $269
I went in looking like a beaten puppy, must have waxed the ego of the inspector. :2 cents:

Believe it or not, that advice actually came from an accountant.

:)

I can see how it would work. The longer they have access to all your files the more chance of them finding something wrong. Best to get them out of there quickly so they have to do the work at their own office.

Also, don't just give them free access to your files. Just give them specifically what they ask for, showing them as little detail as possible. Don't say "There's my filing cabinets, help yourself."

ztik 07-25-2004 06:49 PM

They sent me a letter and reason says because they have some 1099's that don't match up. I pulled the file from 02 and everything matched in the report. I'm guessing maybe I didn't get a 1099 from someone or it got lost.

I'll be sure to crank up the heat to 90 and turn on the humidifier :Graucho

you dont have to get a 1099 for a sponsor to report your income to the IRS

Not sure if this is the same in the US, but I know in Canada you can appeal your audit decision. A friend of mine appealed a couple of times until they came to a number they were both happy with.

NoCarrier 07-25-2004 07:06 PM

Well you posted a thread about it. So fuck yeah we are worried about you now.

good luck with that

BigFish 07-25-2004 07:40 PM

unreported 1099s? nothing to worry about!! i was an assistant to an examination officer at the IRS last spring. if that's all you have unreported, then you'll probably be just assessed interest and a penalty for the underreported amount. what service center sent you the notice?

100% sure. IRS has a very strict definition of income. if you found a radio in the park, technically, you have to report it as income!

TheSaint 07-25-2004 08:16 PM

Depends on the kind of audit. Yours sounds like the very specific kind. I once had the worst possible kind - a fishing expedition really where they hung out in my dining room for 4 days looking for unreported income.

Actually, she was very pleasant. I had a friend high up in the IRS who gave me the advice to be extremely pleasant and professional. He said you are basically looking at a clerk making an hourly wage and the natural tendency is for them to be resentful of someone who they think of as a cheating fat cat.

The kindness paid off. She nailed me for a few small things, compromised on others, and gave me some good advice to boot. I didn't call my accountant - no need to if you understand the law and have not cheated too much.

the key word is technically.

Years ago I didn't know that I had to pay income tax on unemployment. I think I owed the IRS about 900.00 and they sent a letter. I called IRS and said I was unware and could I make two installment payments this month.

To my surprise, the IRS customer service person said fine but if you don't make them then you are in trouble. Being somewhat naive, I asked is there was an alternative.

His reply was let us put you on a monthly payment plan at 25.00 per month and if you pay the amount due within the month no interest and if you decide to pay 25.00 per month interest will be applied. I paid the monies due.

Knock on wood that I don?t get audited for the year 2002 since my cat pissed on a pile of receipts and they are in a plastic bag attached with a note from my accountant and from my insurance company that I reported it. I doubt if the IRS people would like to scuffle through that bag. :glugglug

If you have all your documents together, you shouldn't worry.
