Windows vs. Linux

Aside from nix having better stability, and windows being more user-friendly

are there any major benefits to either system?

I have a laptop collecting dust and im thinking of installing nix just to fuck around with it, just not sure what i am getting myself into.

feedback?

thanks,

You should use Windows 95.

Not unless you consider your laptop to be a toy and you like to muck around with things.

I used linux on my desktop exclusively for about 5 years. I love it. But when I grew up I had more important things to do. Coding became a job, not a hobby. I needed windows apps like photoshop and IE if I wanted to be a webmaster.

I can't see any advantages to Linux if you're not a geek at heart who likes to tinker with things. It's faster and it used to be more stable until XP came out. There's also a lot of neat toys and apps. But that's about it.

Honestly.. I would never use windows as a server for my websites.

Alternatively... I don't think I'd ever use linux or any of those as a workstation either.

I just don't think linux has gotten to the desktop stage quite yet. It still has further to go to be fully useful to me.

If you just want to fuck around with it.. learn about it.. and the laptop is collecting dust, why not?

Generally I agree with MaskedMan on this... but learning a new skill is always worthwhile. :2 cents: :thumbsup

linux is better because most apps are free for linux. As far as needing photoshop goes, as i understand it photoshop 7 is compatible with linux, but even before that there is a program that is virtually the same just a little harder interface to use. I like linux more, i guess maybe i just feel safer cause it is easier to do things ur not supposed to :thumbsup

Every application I write runs on *nix, but I never use it on my desktop.

s9ann0 07-25-2004 10:56 AM

what as a desktop I dunno for servers unix is better though freebsd

the_wizz 07-25-2004 10:56 AM

I've used linux on an off for the past 5 years now, and if it weren't for my wife I'd be using it exclusively.

It runs better on older hardware.

Its more stable (than even XP)

The number of applications available for it grow everyday.

It comes complete with C++, Perl, python and other compilers on it.

I can use it for both a workstation and a server, allowing me to have an apache install (with mysql and php) on my workstation for developing sites.

Graphics are improving every day. The GIMP rocks and can do almost everything that photoshop can do. I just finished some graphics (yea, they need better aliasing, but thats due to my current font renderer....) for a new site and it came out pretty good. http://houseofpussy.net/images/hop.gif

To each his own. As someone once said... use the best tool for the job.....

I've had a lindows (linspire.com) box for over a year now, it's pretty nifty, it's basically just a commercialized version of Debian linux with KDE & some other shiznit...

if you want a VERY easy setup check out linspire.com....the other out of the box, easy as fuck to install linux OS that I've read a lil on is xandros...

woj 07-25-2004 11:27 AM

Just try it, just burn the cd, install it, and see what happens... Unless you are really tech-minded I wouldn't expect too much though...

Nobody mentioning Mac OSX?

Linux is the king here are the reasons why

More stable I never see it crash
More secure by default
Better filesystem
I use Dreamweaver in Linux and it works better then in windows
I use Open Office for all office work it can read Word Docs
I use Mozilla for web browsing and emails, dialers and crap like that can't touch it
I use it on all my servers and as my home desktop.
The new 2.6 is a whole lot faster and getting faster all the time.
Less worry about loosing stuff
Its FREE
Software for it is mostly FREE
There's tons of reasons I could go on all day

My home desktop is Mandrake 10 and servers all running Redhat 9 and Fedora Core 1.

There's loads of distros
www.mandrake.com
www.redhat.com
www.suse.com
www.debian.com

Check them out and decide what you like best you'll love it and never go back.
