AOL; No wonder why it's #1....
OKay, maybe i am the only one, but *I* wonder why it is Number #1 ISP!!
I had a free month trial. After a day, I canceled it!!! Too many buttons, the freakin windows of the browser were small all the time, had dialing-errors alot, and most of the time I couldnt find what page I was on cause of all the little bowser windows. So, my question is... WHO HERE USES AOL??? And can you tell me why it is "Number 1"? LOL ------------------ "We are all porn stars , just some of us are brave enough to do it on film!" http://www.plauder-smilies.de/yellows/kiss2.gif Jamie's Stable |
I don't know AOL or any providers from US,
but maybe it's because there is not better one? ------------------ Life's a bitch |
Every coder knows that AOL sucks but the truth is that the vast majority of people are not that web savy and AOL markets itself on the idiot box to newbies. That is why they have a 20% share of the US market. To be economically realistic webmasters and webmistresses we need to consider AOL as a very real source of potential income however much they may bite.

AOL is easy to use for the computer illiterate. There's nothing easier than getting your way and remaining ignorant.
This is also why Windoze was more popular than OS/2 |
in the UK, AOL gives free discs with 99 free hours out on all the magazines, through the post, inside boxes of cereal (or is that freeserve - i know one of them are doing it now) so Joe Spod just whacks it in the pc and the jobs done (and Joe Spod has been)

Well aol does have it's faults, But they are also good for traveling. I mean you can connect your lap top from anywhere...
I'am on cable, but i do keep an aol account for emergencies, and traveling.. ------------------ Smile and Be Happy Lightning Free Hosting |
Lightning, I have Prodigy internet, and I can do the same...if i had a laptop, i could connect anywhere in the US. So...thats not a real plus for AOL...LOL

I've been using aol since it first came out, and haven't tried anything else, except for freeinet which sucked. Never used prodigy, msn, or earthlink, so I couldn't comment on them.
Anyways, I used to like aol because of the chat rooms, but now I have 3 tos reports on my account and 1 more and I'm kicked off http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/frown.gif Quote:

TOS= Terms of service
I have also been with AOL sence the early days.. I actually still have some of there old version disks dating back to 2.0. Lets see.. I think I was in the seventh or even the sixth grade when I first started using em. That makes it 6-7 or so years with em. Makes it kinda hard to let em go ..heh.. But they do offer some good features but also alot of draw backs. I cant stand there browser for starters. Becides that I havent had many major problems really. They do spread there free month trial disks like crazy like someone said but also.. Most new computers that are bought have the AOL software already loaded up and ready to go right when the person for the first time turns on there computer after buying it.. That could be another reason they have a majority in the buisness.. ::Shrugs::.. |
We stack their free discs up for 6 mos before we do anything with them. Usually have at least 12". They are a blast to sit on the back porch and frisbee out into the yard for the cat or dawg to chase. lol
Then pick em up and recycle them. Hopefully they can do that anyhow. As far as travel?! Stay in places that have their own accesses. They are pert common nowadays and then just make sure you dump everything and run defrag. I know thats not fool prrof and it surprised me that so far I have not found one system so far that I couldn't run defrag from the run line. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/biggrin.gif |
Hey MindWaste, you should check to see if you have any of their mini cds or their 3.0 version, look at some of these ended auctions on Ebay, that's crazy.
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI...tem=1229801464 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI...tem=1230705810 I think that AOL sucks. I still don't see how a company can charge a few bucks more than most other providers, yet be the biggest ISP in the US. I guess that like people say, it's like the "Idiots Net Connection". The thing is that if you get yourself a customizable startup page and download ICQ, you have pretty close to the same thing. Except you don't have your computer saying "YOU HAVE MAIL", which I'm sure would get annoying after the first few days, he he he. I just get a kick outta their promotional cds that say that they'll give you 720 FREE HOURS, then in small print it says "to be used in the first month". Why not just put "ONE MONTH FREE", that'd be much easier. When it comes to net access. I always say, stick to LOCAL access, that's the way to go, great prices and their right in town, so it's easy to deal with them and it's much cheaper, you can get unlimited local access for $15 per month here. What does AOL charge, isn't it like $23 per month. I have cable modem now from Charter, which is beautiful, I'm glad that i don't have to deal with dial up. |
Easy to see why AOL is number 1...marketing...no other isp is promoted nearly as much as AOL. So when a newbie gets that first gateway..they think "time to get AOL its #1!!!!!!!!!".

When we first switched from prodigy to AOL in 94 or 95, the first thing I insisted the hubby do is shut off those dumb voices and sounds. Bugles blared is someone you knew came on AIM and all of that. Annoying to say the least. I'm sure our neighbors in the apt next door heard me more than once complaining about something or that dumb 2 hour boot off right in the midst of doing something.
We went local in 95 and have never looked back. lol Prodigy s*cked and AOL was even worse! Tried a trial of MSN in there and it took 6 mos to get them off the card and a yr to get reimbursed. (Had to shut msn off at the card co no less) |
Gemini, I feel your pain! I took the 6 month free trial (MSN) they offered way back when, then cancelled, well they certainly did cancel my account, but continued to bill my Visa, for several months, I called them, they said they would cancel it and reimburse me. A year passed, I forgot about it, and they never reimbursed me. Then one day I got my Visa bill, and after a year, they were billing me again, funny thing is, I couldn't even log on, as I wasn't a valid customer. I called them again. They suggested I would have to go online and sign up again as a new customer, so that I could cancel my account, which didn't even exist! I told her to "go fuck herself", and I wasn't about to be charged for 2 non existant accounts, (which no doubt would have happened), then I got nasty. She promised to cancel the account, and reimburse all my money. She really did cancel my account this time, but I was never reimbursed the money, which was in excess of one hundred dollars, but I let it go, it just wasn't worth the hassle after 2 years of their bull, I figured I'd somehow wind up signed up for another year. My experience with AOL was probably worse, we won't get into that tonight. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif

Ouch Mischief! We were lucky with the AOL cancellation. Thankfully I have a old man that just doesn't let it go. He called them every day 5-10 times a day until MSN ops probably knew his ring. lmao
