Mosquitos: the bane of our existence

Ok fellow victims, it's time to share all your remedies to make the skeeter bites stop itching! I'm in agony over here. I know you're not supposed to scratch, but it's just so...

arg!

Musn't....

scratch!

ahhhhhhhh....

fr33s3x 07-24-2004 10:48 AM

I luV them

brand0n 07-24-2004 10:51 AM

they got my daughter yesterday bad. they found the 1 spot on her leg that we didnt coat in skin so soft

i feel so bad becouse they swell up on her. =(

CDSmith 07-24-2004 10:54 AM

I use this stuff called "Afterbite".... it looks like a highlighter marker or something, but it does work. Takes the itch right out.

The city fogged for mosquitos this past week here.... last night they caught only 2 of the little buggers in the trap. A few weeks ago they caught over 70 in one night, which is pretty insane.

Winnipeg is now virtually mosquito-free. Weeee!

Tala 07-24-2004 10:54 AM

My husband scratches them until they look horrible, but after that, the itching is gone and they heal nicely. Strange, strange man.

If you have no Calomine lotion, do what my grandmother used to do: Get a teabag, (I suggest chamomile), cold-steep it for about five minutes, then set the bag on the bite. It helps. :glugglug

Winnepeg fogs for mosquitos?? Shit, why can't my little podunk town do that?! :helpme

mastamindz 07-24-2004 10:57 AM

Fuck, scratch all you want, you have the west nile virus now.

Grammar Police 07-24-2004 10:57 AM

I thought black people were the bane of our existence?

Elli 07-24-2004 11:02 AM

haha G.P. you crack me up. Oh, did I miss a comma there? :Graucho

Tea bags, eh? Hmm... And Afterbite. I'm heading to the store now, so I'll have to look that up.

Vancouver went pesticide-free, I believe, so no more fogging for insects unless nothing else works.

Tala, my man does the same thing. He complains about scars, then scratches them raw. *shakes head*

My grandma (who lived in Winnipeg) used to put calomine lotion on them, but I don't remember that helping at all.

CDSmith 07-24-2004 11:05 AM

That's twice I've helped you now Elli. First with the window AC unit, and now this. You know my mom always says "things go in three's"..... so what else can I help you with? :Graucho

got any other itches you need scratched?

Sosa 07-24-2004 11:06 AM

I don't do anything really. Scratch a bit at first but then they go away quick.

Manowar 07-24-2004 11:18 AM

what is "fogging" for mosqitous

(English here, we only have gnats)

Spraying of malathion around yards, neighbourhoods, and the city. It comes out in the form of a fog, and it kills bugs.

Winnipeg also sprays larvacide in early spring and late fall to lower the mosquito population.

Trucks drive around to ponds and ditches etc and use a pesticide fog to kill the larve and bugs

Did I read this correctly?

TheJimmy 07-24-2004 12:31 PM

in some parts of the world (Saudi and Florida) I found simple baby oil to be effective at getting them to stay off my legs & arms....

I know it sounds strange but I swear it worked....not sure if it does now...

another one that a lot of people I know used effectively is Avon's Skin-so-Soft...

Jace 07-24-2004 12:31 PM

believe it or not, my wife uses clear nail polish on them and it works like a charm to get it to go down and to get the itching to stop

I think you are confusing cures. Nail polish is for chiggers.

BODY CARE: Immediately upon entering the house remove all your clothes and wash them . Take a shower. Use alcohol around the arm pits and ankles and other tight body places. If you have bites the next day, as a kid the best thing I found to stop a chigger itch was to apply fingernail polish on the bite.

Now if only I knew an Avon lady.. hmm.

I use baby oil on my skin almost every day after my shower, so I don't think it's working.

So you have been bitten by a mosquito or similar blood sucker. Then have a look at the following tips to get some relief from the itch of a mosquito bite.

You can get some relief from the itching and discomfort by trying one of the following:

*
Applying soap on the area will bring instant relief.

*
Apply paste made of baking soda and water and apply directly to the affected area.

*
Make a paste of meat tenderizer and a little water, and apply to swollen bite area. Meat tenderizer breaks down the protein quickly and eases the itching and reaction to the bite.

*
Dab rubbing alcohol on bite as soon as possible and bites disappear like magic.

*
Apply a solution of 50/50 lime juice and water.

More information sent into the site reads:

Your tips on how to stop itching from mosquito bites is O.K. but the remedies are residual relief. There is another sure fire way to instantly stop the itching. As soon as itching starts dampen and fold several times a washcloth. Place it in the microwave as it is quicker or find some other way to heat it. (Tap water is usually not hot enough). The temperature should be hot but not enough to scald the skin and tolerable. Place the hot washcloth directly over the bite. The person will begin to feel a sharp, burning, and stinging pain exactly where the bite occurred. Keep the washcloth over the bite for about one minute while tolerating the pain. The mosquito saliva contains protein left inside the bite and the hot temperature neutralizes the protein which causes the sharp pain. After removing the washcloth, there will be no itching sensation. It works each time.

I was in Mexico, and lime and salt does the trick in taking away the itch, just sprinkle the salt on the lime and rub hard over the bite, so it breaks the skin. But not hard though. When I am away in a hot climate I carry this with me. What a life saver. But if your allergic to mosquito bites, unfortunately it won't take the swelling down.

Winnipeg has got to be the worst city I've ever been in for mosquitos. If they didn't fog, summers would be unbearable.

I think that Afterbite stuff is mostly alcohol. Dries up the skin & no more itching. :thumbsup

It will kill the itch in a second plus you can roll around in poison ivy or oak too! It is also fantastic for black fly bites here in Canada.

Ooo good call! I love Burt's Bees stuff! :)

Platinumpimp 07-24-2004 01:18 PM

When I hear a mosquito at night when I am sleeping, I'll hunt it down as long as when I have killed it LOL

The Heron 07-24-2004 01:23 PM

I have a natural mosquito barrier, it is called hair! The little buggers get caught up in my arm and leg hair and can't do anything till i squish em... it is great fun.

LadyMischief 07-24-2004 01:26 PM

Fuck that, try blackflies... evil little bastards.

TheWildcard 07-24-2004 01:28 PM

I think I've seen her post on the board a few times, maybe she'll be back today :)

Tom_PMs 07-24-2004 01:29 PM

I think I remember Afterbite from when I was a kid.. The neighbor kids mom used to put mud on bites and stings though.

The skeeters here in NY state have shown signs of California-group encephalitis. I guess 2 forms of that can affect humans. So now it's full kill season on skeeters.

They recommend using a repellent with DEET.

Peaches 07-24-2004 01:32 PM

Also try benadryl orally

I've gotten to the point where I don't go out in the yard unless I coat myself in high concentrated deet spray :( My little boat flipped over on my dock and has been collecting water for a few months. There is NO WAY I'm going down there, lol! Thankfully we also have a lot of bats that eat them :)

<public service announcement> If you have a lot of mosquitos and pets, please put them on a heartworm preventative :) (the pets, not the mosquitos :winkwink: </public service announcement>

Exactly.

Built at the joining of two major rivers, much of Winnipeg used to be a swamp, basically. Mosquitos love swamps. However, last year was a very dry hot spring & summer and our mosquito problem was negligeable..... but this year has been different. Lots of rain in early spring has brought them out in full force.

The fogging has now remedied that. :D

There are quite a few residents here that are against the fogging though. Contrary to what Environment Canada and Health Canada says, these people feel that spraying malathion is harmful to our health and the environment. Someone even got arrested the other night for blocking the fogging trucks from leaving the compound. It's a hot issue.

Peaches 07-24-2004 02:14 PM

Let me also add that you do NOT want to be spraying deet on just shaved legs....trust me on that :thumbsup

Duly noted. :)

I wonder about putting on sunblock and repellent. Which should you put on first? Or do they counteract each other's effectiveness at all?

Quickdraw 07-24-2004 02:28 PM

One of the best things I have done for mosquitos around here is sprinkle garlic powder around. They seem to stear clear of it. May stink for the night abit, but the strong smell goes away shortly, and the skeeters stay away for weeks..
Garlic is cheap and really does wonders :)

StingEze for after the bite though..(Not one this year I might add)

oooOoOo garlic powder? I may just have to try that! Maybe I should move my garlic garden to the deck :)

I used GOOGLE to find the ultimate answer to your original question. This solution came up every single time when I searched the topic using keywords "Mosquito" "Bite" "Cure" "Hot Babe."

SURE FIRE CURE!

1. Assess situation (how many bites, location, etc.).
2. Remove clothes.
3. Take long hot shower.
4. Use baby oil to soften skin.
5. Apply any other lotions or perfumes you really like.
6. Fix your hair.
7. Get really buzzed off of your favorite ?drink.?
8. Take a cab over to my house.
9. Stay all night.

If bite continues to itch, simply repeat each day until mosquito bite goes away.

Hey, I just did a Mapquest (directions request) and it said that the drive would be:

Total Est. Time: 38 hours, 41 minutes

Total Est. Distance: 2557.69 miles

I wonder how much cab fare would be???

we've had it down here last few years.

to make it stop itching take your finger nail and press down on it, from 2 directions so you make kind of like a little "X" across it, dont press hard enough to break the skin but press hard enough to where its gonna leave an indentation

it'll stop itching shortly after :)
