Your workstation: Desktop or Laptop?

Do you work from your desktop or a laptop most of the time?

I do my work from a desktop but I was thinking of getting either an Alienware or an off the shelf laptop with an okay video card. Best thing about getting the laptop is basically unlimited internet. When I'm travelling I can use my cell phone (bluetooth) as an internet connection. Sure it'll run about 33.6 but it's better than nothing or paying a lot more money.

bringer 07-23-2004 05:13 PM

i think it'll run faster then 33.6, but its still nice to have the mobility

Viper2K1 07-23-2004 05:17 PM

laptop 95% of the time

any complaints about just using a laptop?

NakedBo 07-23-2004 05:23 PM

Laptop, and it works fine for me. I like the fact that I am able to take it everywhere I go :thumbsup

The Editor 07-23-2004 05:44 PM

I have my desktop that I work from in a spare bedroom but getting a laptop is on my list. I would LOVE to be able to carry around a laptop so that I could work anywhere that I wanted.

:2 cents:

Actually now that I think about it you guys should really see my neighbor's house! He's in his 70's and he's a computer nut! He has to have the latest thing!

But getting back to me I personally would like to have a desktop both up and downstairs, plus have my laptop. Plus I'm also working on getting a fireplace back in my living room....but I digress!

I remember my first computer costing around $3,000 - now you can get one for under $1K!

bdld 07-23-2004 06:02 PM

a few laptops do the trick. each serve their own purpose.. no need for a desktop

Zerof8 07-23-2004 06:39 PM

i use both of them about the same. I just have different stuff that i do on both, mostly because my desktop is linux and my laptop is windows, only because if i run linux on my laptop i will lose the function of my usb ports and my mouse pad and i cant do everything without a mouse:(

Adultnet 07-23-2004 06:55 PM

mostly desktop ...

Ross 07-23-2004 06:56 PM

Right now I am sitting at my desktop with the laptop just to my left. I'm working on both of them tonight. Trying to prepare a weeks worth of work for my employees!!

I'm off on vacation tomorrow and they need work! I've been awake for 19 hours and working for around 15 hours :(

ZanyCash Larry 07-23-2004 06:56 PM

Mostly desktop, but I use Labtops too.

LadyMischief 07-23-2004 06:57 PM

Isn't it hard to use a mouse on a lap top? At the risk of sounding ignorant, I only used my friend's laptop a few times and u have to use your finger on this pad on the laptop, wouldn't it be hard to make galleries or something when you need to use the mouse a lot??

woj 07-23-2004 07:35 PM

Use both, windows laptop and unix desktop....

You get used to it fairly quickly, after a while it becomes as natural as using a mouse... at least that's how it is for general use, if you are a designer doing freehand drawings a touchpad may not work that great for you...

wyldblyss 07-23-2004 08:28 PM

My plan was to use the laptop for a couple hours of the day when I want to be mobile around the house, the desktop the rest of the time.

Turned my new laptop on and I haven't done one thing on my desktop since then. :)

Tala 07-23-2004 08:31 PM

Desktop. My laptop is D.O.A. :(

RobD 07-23-2004 08:33 PM

depends on what you do, I use both, my laptop is next to my desktop when I´m home. Right now I´m waiting for the docking station, it´s hard to work on a 15 inch monitor when you´re used to 19 or bigger. If you get a badass notebook like a p4 3.0 with a 17inch monitor it could replace your desktop, but I think battery time sucks when you´re on the road and it´s bulky to carry too, you should think about it pretty well :2 cents:

Peaches 07-23-2004 08:35 PM

80% laptop, 20% desktop

Once I stop being lazy and get a docking station and move my stuff off my desktop, it will probably 100% laptop.

Which kinda sucks since I have 3 perfectly good desktops sitting around now :(

i think that the laptop mouse sux. but i just plug a mouse in the usb port for when im not on the go. Probably could take it everywhere with a mouse plugged in if that mouse is the ms bluetooth.

Peaches 07-23-2004 08:42 PM

It's broken now and I'm sending it back, but I have this
and before it died :( it was great for traveling :)

Shortbread 07-23-2004 09:34 PM

I'm thinking of getting Pentium Centrino powered notebook. 1.6ghz, 1gig ram, 60g 7200 rpm HD, with a Raedon 9000 (only 32mb).

I carry a optical mouse around with me, usually space isn't a issue so it works out good.

EZRhino 07-24-2004 05:05 PM

laptop ........ I like being able to work in the patio if I want to

blazin 07-24-2004 05:10 PM

Got myself a laptop couple months ago and just can't get used to the bloody thing.

I'm sticking to the desktop - about to give the laptop to my mother

Jim_Gunn 07-24-2004 09:58 PM

I use both. An old Win Me desktop at home that I use sparingly now just for web surfing late at night; and Pentium M chipped Dell laptop in a docking station on the desk in my office and also on the road. Also have another dedicated editing desktop in the office.

adamneve 07-24-2004 10:10 PM

i prefer the Desktop
