Got a new cellphone today... Pretty fun toy... I think I'm in love!
My contract with my current carrier expires in a week, so I finally went out and bought the phone I've been dying to get for months.
It's called the Danger Hiptop (T-Mobile markets it as the Sidekick). It's got a 16-bit colour screen that displays at 240x160 and a full QWERTY keyboard with a scroll wheel. It's tri-band with 32 MB of RAM, 4 MB of flash memory. I've got a full featured email program that can handle 3 POP3 email accounts and supports JPG, GIF, PNG, DOC, PDF and MIDI, WAV and AIFF files less than 100 KB as attachments. I can send myself MIDI/WAV/AIFF files and use them as custom ringtones. It's got a great address book program and a full featured calendar/to-do program. Most importantly, I can use it to access ICQ/AIM and do full-blown HTML web browsing. I was surfing and posting on GFY earlier. It's the same speed as a 56K dialup connection, but all files are passed through their server first and compressed/resized to load faster. I can turn off images very easily to make the surfing even faster. It can also multitask. So I can be surfing a website and then flip down to AIM or to a new email, without losing the website. I can also purchase apps or games for the phone through a catalog on the phone. Existing apps include a Telnet/SSH client, a sync program and Yahoo! Messanger. I can also hook it up to my PC through USB and program my own apps. Anyone else have one of these? I'm in love with it! I obviously can't stop talking about it :D http://www.fido.ca/portal/en/product/hiptop_pg2.shtml http://www.fido.ca/flash/hiptop/load_movies.html http://www.514bombed.com/images/hiptop.gif |

Sounds like a cool new toy.
That's pretty cool, how much?

looks cool as hell though. :glugglug |
it sells for $425 CDN or $275 CDN with a 2 year contract.
it's remarkably easy to use. the only downside is it has no hahahahahahahahahaha support as of yet. they'll be releasing a software upgrade for that eventually. |
looks pretty nifty :thumbsup
is that a phone?
Wow!
Nice features. The size limit of the pictures was the only drawback for me , so i use 56k wap on a laptop , its a bit bulkier , but alot more productive, ( and only a few thousand more )
looks alright but does it have video capture and face to face calling?
when I can finsd a phoen that does all the stuff above (liek my nokia 9201i can) PLUS the face to face video liek my 3g phone can THEN i'll be the happiest phone user alive |
I use my phone for calling

That thing is WAY too big.
Personally, I prefer something like my Samsung E700... it plays a decent game of chess, makes acceptable pictures, lets me read news pages, and I can use it for calling. That's more than enough for me :glugglug |
Nice toy :) :thumbsup
Good luck in the future:thumbsup
I was thinking of getting one of those asian made UMTS phones. NEC, LG or Sharp. If anyone knows a piece which doesn't weight more than 120-130g, please tell me! |
that is the exact phone my hubby wanted but they did not have it in stock and there is a 6 month waiting list for it where we live. hope you enjoy it!
I like my cell phones as small as they can be, but regardless, awesome phone!
man wait till the new nokia comes out it does all that but on 3g so its broadband speed!

Nice! I haven't seen that one yet. Where'd you get it from?
I only have a phone because I need to call people :Graucho
kinda big
Fido ? My parthner got one exactly like that
Too big.. but still a nice toy :thumbsup
looks cool
way too big for a cell phone don't you thinK? but the feature rocks :thumbsup
that's a hot phone...hope the reception is good as well. let us know
the size isn't that big a deal... to use the features like AIM, email and web, it needs to be big.
when i wanna use it as a phone, i use the earbud headset that came with it. the reception is a lot more clear than my old telus phone. KRL, it's offered by Fido up here in Canada and by T-Mobile and Suncom in the US. T-Mo calls it the Sidekick. |
That thing looks huge.
I could eat my phone. |
hell, why don't you just tie your laptop to your belt LOL. I'm a low-tech person. I carry a phone to talk. If I want to compute, I go on the computer. For pictures I use my digital camera. I never even figured out how to use my voice mail on my phone yet, all that other stuff would drive me nutty. Although for the person that just loves gadgets that phone seems like the ultimate gadget.
My friend got that recently. I guess it's good if you're always away from home/office. :2 cents:

that's one sweet little gadget
I want one like that... but I don't know that I have the skillz for something so complicated. :)
=/
I take it 3G hasn't struck a chord in the U.S yet? Fast internet [approx 35kb/s] Rumor has it that 4G is being developed in Japan [shock horror] and does 10mbit... for a phone I think its a little much, but hook it up to your pc and you're flying. |

For phone use, GPRS isn't all that bad. It's about 6-9kb/s which is pretty good considering images get recompressed on my phone. I think JPGs are compressed to 25% of the file size, and animated GIFs only show the first frame. Another cool feature is all the data I store (pictures, calendar appointments, notes, emails, etc) automatically get synched with a web utility that I can access from anywhere. |
Looks like a sweet phone, but the thing is what would you rather have...
Sidekick or Treo 600 |
I had that thing for like 3 days...I signed up with tmobile for 2 years paid 250 for the fucker, and after 3 days decided i hated it...When it displays a webpage, it appears all distorted and ugly.
E-mails take like 3 minutes to send and a hidden catch...ALL INCOMING ANG OUTGOING E_MAILS ARE SCREENED AND STORED ON TMOBILE SERVERS INDEFINATELY. Not my cup of tea...Using it as a phone was like holding a brick to your face and the speaker is like 3 inches away from your ear, so its hard as hell to hear anything. Cool toy, but thats all...just a toy... |
that's a corny phone
Think it could run party poker? ;)
I have one...had it for about 4 months now...helps when I can surf the real web when in a crunch and the email function is king! Nothing like email on the go...and you can decide if you want to respond right on the spot. Good deal. :thumbsup
i got one its ok, i like the football led game you can dl :)
AC |
If you're all about the games, why not get the NGage
TREO 600
^^ GOD! ICQ/AIM/MSN/SSH all kinds of shit, awesome awesome awesome phone! |
