Image compression software where I can specify maximum filesize?
I need to compress around 10,000 images where I need to set the maximum size (to say 80 KB). I want the software to automatically compress/resize all images as required to meet the max file size limit. Some of these images are large (400 KB, 1600*1000 pixels) so the software would have to resize as well in addition to jpg compression (all files are in jpg format).
Is there anything that does this? |
graphic workshop professional will let you select all the pics in one folder, specify what size you want the pics - how much compression they have, what text you want on them and which folder you want them all sent to

xat.com optimizer is a cool image compression proggie
actually its one of the best i've used for jpegs don't know if you can specify a filesize |
Macromedia Fireworks will do everything you need in Batch Process mode.

Damn, I wrote tutorial on this very subject. I went back into GFY using the search, but I can't find it.
You need photshop 6. to do it, you basically make a 'new set' in the actions tab. Then create a new 'action', the puter will now record what you do to that image, (open a single image before you start). With the image open go to FILE > BATCH > AUTOMATE > FIT IMAGE... Set the size and width that you want your photos to be. It resizes them to meet one dimension with out going over the other. Understand? If you set it to width = 550, height = 550, then no image will wider or taller than 550. After the computer resizes the image. Stop recording. Now you have a customized resizer that will do everypic on your computer if you want. Go to File > automate > batch to use your new image resizer. The advantage to using photoshop is that it is hands down the best imaging software available, plus that 'actions' tab is completely configurable, you can record as many actions as you want. I think it's better than any other software available. You can add actions forever. ------------------ [email protected] LeeannOnline.com usexfan.com |
Redshoe, I use photoshop 6 - I couldnt find any filesize option (by filesize I mean 80 Kb, not pixel size). WHere is it?
Idinternet - does Fireworks allow a maximum filesize (in kilobytes) option? Kat, same thing for Graphic Workshop Pro - can I specify max filesize in kilobytes? phon, thanks. I'll look it up. Neole |
Yup... Fireworks allows you to fit images to a certain size - for example, make them all precisely 30kb. Otherwise, you can specify a maximum - for example, all files must be 30kb or smaller.
I see no reason to use to exact size feature, the second feature is much more use as smaller is better. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif |
Thanks! Sounds perfect for my needs.

ldinternet, I downloaded the Fireworks 4 30 days trial demo. I can use the export feature fine with the target file size for a single file, but when I try to use the Batch feature with target file size it does not work. During a batch process when I select the export settings and try to specify a file size, the value keeps resetting to -0.001 . What am I doing wrong? Also, I cant find a maximum feature, only a target size feature (in the export options).

Hypo, I'm still here... if you bump this thread so it stays on the first page I'll edit this message and sort you out in the morning.
In the meantime, it might be worth your while trying to find Fireworks 3. It's easier to use... and more straight forward features, some say better than version 4... |
I managed to figure it out - I created a command with the optimize to size setting and executed it using a script. So it works - at the rate its going it will probly take 2 days to finish with all my images though. Thanks again!
