Why do people get star struck?

This weekend in San Diego there's this big comic book convention. My friends go every year for the whole thing. Artists, actors, various celebrities usually attend to plug new projects. My friends are all excited and have been giddy as a school girl trying on her first training bra. They're taking things to be signed, have pictures taken, they'll be buying "cells" and all kinds of other crap.

Then other times we'll go to a concert and we'll either go really early or stay really late in hopes of getting tickets signed and pictures taken. My friends buy crap from the roadies all the time. Picks, drum heads, etc.

It bores me to death and I have absolutely no desire to get a piece of paper signed by some celebrities. Big fucking deal. I don't get it. Any of you guys into this type of stuff?

I see famous people fairly often in London and have only once gone star struck. I am a huge R.E.M. fan and one day I litteraly bumped into Micheal Stipe outside of a book store on Charing Cross Road. I mean, this was my musical hero since I was a young teen. For me starstruck just meant going silent. I didn't even ask him for an autpgraph or anything.

I could never see myself getting giddy over anyone.

It is an attempt to be connected to them. You might want to try it. It is fun.

Usually those who are star struck see the people they are obsessedabout as an embodyment of their greatest desires to suceed in something or have an undying feeling of devotion for a person that can not really be explained. It is mostly about how you are taught, when I was young my mother corrected me on calling someone an idol and also at putting all my faith in a human "roll model" especially if it was not a humanitarianist. Since then I have never put a human above myself because of their accomplishments, I honor them for their achievements but I do not see them as anything other than a person who worked at something that I did not or harder than me at something I did. Idolizing another human only assures you will have a mental road block in surpassing them.

I have also found treating people who have not wronged you with the same level of decency and respect to be the best way of dealing with life. I have met many stars and because I was not hopping up and down or feinting they talked to me, some even said thanks for being cool.

When I see famous people around here, I either a) don't do anything, just let them be or b) acknowledge that I recognize them with a comment like "Shopping in the same store as a famous movie star, life sure is rough." and they chuckle and then that's that.

I think they appreciate it that way. No hounding, but no "so intimidated that I can't talk to them" feelings.

The only autograph i've ever gotten was Jack Charlton's. I think it's great to get a piece of memorabilia or something, but i don't do the whole giddy thing.

I can just imagine what they're thinking.

"Christ.. antoher retard.."

haha.

exactly. Also, I don't want to find out that someone I really liked (like Stipe) was actually a jerk. So, I would rather just make a mental note that I have seen them and leave it at that.
