Got a Window a/c, now the clouds are coming in!

Isn't that always the way? We finally get an a/c unit for my office's window, and now I'm watching the grey clouds roll in. What's with that, eh?

Fizzgig 07-19-2004 09:31 PM

It's gods way of telling you you should have given money to the church instead.

Shame on you, Elli!
hehe

Dont worry. It's the anticipation now that will make it even better once they go away.

rip raster 07-19-2004 09:40 PM

It's still hot as fuck though

ba dum dum!

(that's your little drum roll) :)

Well, I got to use it for about 20 minutes. It cools VERY nicely and quickly! There's a little thermostat on it you can set it to, or you can just use the fan. The only problem is that it's kind of taped into the window frame, since it's an old aluminum swing-open window. heheh

hehe I wish! If I got one of those, I'd hate to get the ducts cleaned and probably get a new furnace while I'm at it, so I opted for the window option. :winkwink:

jman likes to have the windows open when the central air is on.

Elli 07-20-2004 10:50 AM

Naughty JMan! :)

Seriously, does anyone else have one of these window units? Mine seems awfully noisy, but I don't know how noisy they are supposed to be. :\

TurboAngel 07-20-2004 10:53 AM

We have 2 of them and they are noisy.

I have one. Yes, they're noisy but the noise is constant so you do tend to get used to it after a while.

I remember the day I installed it... it was 35 C out, about 7 years ago, I had been sweltering in the heat for a long time here with just a 3 speed fan for cooling...... UHG. The second I got it in the window and turned it on it was like AHHHHHHH..... amazing.

So much better than a cold shower.

yessss :) Sooo nice!

I would liken the sound to that of an old fridge. But then, it's still worth it. :)

Well, like I stated before, if I get a central system for this old farmhouse, I'll probably have to get all the ducting redone and also a new furnace. That's a huge outlay of money at one time, and frankly, there's isn't that much of it to go around at the moment. Not only that, but the top floor is the only really unbearable spot during the day, and only one of the rooms on that floor is used at that time. SO I opted for the window unit option.

What? What's the omen? That it's getting hotter or that I broke down and bought a/c?

Rankings 07-20-2004 11:25 AM

all units are noisy, but congrats, stay cool

Tom_PMs 07-20-2004 11:31 AM

You could consider a whole house attic fan. Basically just sucks the air from the bottom through the top in one Whoosh. But they're 'spensive.

I have central heat and air, but the one thermostat is in the living room at the back of the house. Bedroom is upstairs at the front of the house. So in the mornin, I roast in bed with the sun blazing in and the AC doesnt kick in anyway. bah.. So I sleep with a fan on anyway. I guess I need a remote thermostat or a helper monkey.

mardigras 07-20-2004 11:52 AM

My attic fan ran about $125 at Lowes a few years back, not sure what they cost now. If you run it on high and open a window it's a wind tunnel. It's great to blow the heat out of the house before running the air-conditioner. The house cools quicker and the AC doesn't have to work as hard. The difference in your electric bill will more than pay back the cost of the fan.

phogirl69 07-20-2004 01:10 PM

Is a window a/c hard to install? Basically from what I understand it goes below the window or is it "in place" of the window? What is the purpose of having it at the window? I might just have to go get a portable one...
