is there any such thing as ...

an unselfish act?

probably not

Yes... if you'll take a bullet for a friend, I'd say that's pretty unselfish.

Otherwise, so long as you're still alive... then it can always be argued that you did something to feel good, or for reward, self satisfaction.... what ever.

The ultimate sacrifice though means there's no thought about yourself involved.

hmmmm, thats a hard one...let me think for myself maybe i will get back to you :-)

I think so...can't think of a good example right now but I imagine there are many.

Babagirls 07-18-2004 01:47 AM

yes

Yes, but there's no such thing as a PURELY unselfish act. Basically it all comes down to doing what makes us feel good or what makes us feel less bad.

Exception: Mothers. I think they are sometimes compelled to do things for their children, and no thought of self ever enters into it.

Yeah, a lot of things just deep down are done for ourselves even though we say they are for others

hmm.. yours is the only answer that made me think.. let's assume that this person does not believe in an afterlife.. if that's the case then would he still do it?

He might .. if he thought his own life was worthless.. so I guess you're right, that's an unselfish act
