In a nutshell, the guy that broke the abuse (read: torture) story says he has video of US soldiers sexually abusing/raping young Iraqi males in the prison.

"Young male prisoners were filmed being sodomised by American soldiers at the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, according to the journalist who first revealed the abuses there.

Seymour Hersh, who reported on the torture of the prisoners in New Yorker magazine in May, told an audience in San Francisco that "it's worse". But he added that he would reveal the extent of the abuses: "I'm not done reporting on all this," he told a meeting of the American Civil Liberties Union.

He said: "The boys were sodomised with the cameras rolling, and the worst part is the soundtrack, of the boys shrieking. And this is your government at war."

He accused the US administration, and all but accused President George Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney of complicity in covering up what he called "war crimes". "

Reputable publications have previously reported on Iraqi women getting raped and even becoming pregnant. This part of the story has been mostly buried and kept hushed up in the media. (like this one in the Village Voice but there's plenty more just a google away).

for you people that have not been following this, i have been throwing links to Iraqi rape since they have been reporting it.

your american soldiers are

a. male soldiers are raping female soldiers in iraq.
b. male soldiers are raping iraqi boys in iraq.
c. male soldiers are raping iraqi women and children.

this is nothing new.

it happens in many wars. and iraq is no exception.

it happened in Okinawa (still happening) and soldiers routinely rape continuously throughout the world.

And besides, its not like Condi, Cheney, W. and Rummy got together in a room with out powell and said "Lets have some of our boys rape some of theirs".

Its nice that no matter what ammount of good is being done there (and no matter who the fuck you are, you have to admit that there is some good being done...) everyone wants to focus on the bad.

That's true. Rape is a tool of war. Raping and pillaging have been the promised rewards of solidiers since war began.

Rape and plunder / looting have been a part of every war, and once upon a time were considered one of the "perks" of soldiering, a dangerous, low-paying occupation.

War, rape, torture, looting... as much as some of us would like to doubt it... are a part of human nature. That doesn't make it OK, but they can be expected in any war.

well, this does not happen on a large scale.

there are some sociological forces at play.

currently the USA has an all-volunteer army. who volunteers? usually the guys with the least alternative opportunities, the least education, the least "breeding".

and in that milieu you will get a few sociopaths.

on the other hand you rarely hear of this sort of shit from the british army.

at least in the last few hundred years. the brits are very proper, and civil---personally i've never read of a report of a british soldier involved in shit like this.

so it is not universal behavior with all soldiers in all wars.

Was waiting on this and a lot more. Tho I doubt some of it will actually reach the stage of being published.

About two months ago I was "priviledged" (tho duboius word!) to see some images shot in both Afghanistan and Iraq by a friend who is a war photographer. This material was being hand-processed for extra safety since it was almost a year's work in both these countries.

These images were not in any prison, but all over the place. Many were "nice" images, but the "others" were a fucking horror story and it was these images that "stuck".

It's not my place to be specific about the nature of them - the images are not my property, - but they do hit on the realms of what can only be described as torture and murder. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that some people need shot on sight for what are clearly war crimes. Seeing this material, tho I'm not an advocate of capital punishment - it sure makes a good case for it.

There are "other issues" going on and, least in the immediate future, I doubt this material will be published, - but will be some day. It took five years after Vietnam before Time had the guts to use some of this guy's material on a cover.

This conduct also makes a reasonable case for the indictment of the instigators and those in command of this US adventure - it's little surprise they were opposed to the International Criminal Court. Their day will come :winkwink:

I would not trust them with one dime - their track record fully supports this.
