Paranoid?

what do you think?

Fizzgig 07-17-2004 02:21 AM

"As aware Americans" :1orglaugh

"Before I'm labeled a racial profiler or -- worse yet -- a racist, let me add this. A month ago I traveled to India to research a magazine article I was writing. My husband and I flew on a jumbo jet carrying more than 300 Hindu and Muslim men and women on board. We traveled throughout the country and stayed in a Muslim village 10 miles outside Pakistan. I never once felt fearful. I never once felt unsafe. I never once had the feeling that anyone wanted to hurt me. This time was different. "

The typical "I'm not racist, I have 2 black friends!" comment :1orglaugh

I don't know about this one...you remember the Alligator Alley fiasco?

Honeyslut 07-17-2004 02:40 AM

patriot act should have said something to make that screening process void

What a fucking laugh
I love this question :

Quote:

So here's my question: Since the FBI issued a warning to the airline industry to be wary of groups of five men on a plane who might be trying to build bombs in the bathroom, shouldn't a group of 14 Middle Eastern men be screened before boarding a flight?

I dunno it's pretty fuckign whacky to me

both times Ive travelled in the US i've been screened again and again
when I was flying from LA to Vegas both me and my travellign companion were stopped form gettign one the flight until we were subjected to what amounted to a near strip search - the only reason we could come up with was that I have an Indian middle name and my friends was an Israeli.
Second tme I went there when i was travelling back from US I got got stopped and checked, checked again- went thru all my luggage and ran multiple scans over my bags even had to call me back when i was about to board to run scans again!
..again for "no real apparent reason'

so how the let a group of Syrians all acting suspicious on a flight without screening is beyond me and the only thing i can think of is to think liek a conspiracy theorist and say "they must have been planted there as part of a US governement scare monger campaign" :glugglug

I thought for sure this was a thread about me...... I was getting really really worried.

But I'm not paranoid.

Raven 07-17-2004 09:21 AM

Makes me wonder, baddog...

I get searched regularly. I fly once a month to various cities.

I do know that one way tickets are flagged. It just happened to me.

The friendly TSA people, as they search me every single time, have said their funding is limited....and is becoming less and less.

The story from that woman is very detailed and seems objective, given the circumstances. Hard to be objective when you see a group acting in a bizarre manner, no matter what their country of origin is.

Too long man! Got bored after the first couple hundred pages...

I recently watched a report on CNN about professional antitero personal being deployed undercover in every plane. I guess that's a good idea. But what happens if the plane is full of terrorists?

Jman 07-17-2004 10:39 AM

I'ts a great song ;-)

Jman 07-17-2004 10:41 AM

Paranoid
Finished with my woman
'Cause she couldn't help me with my mind
People think I'm insane
Because I am frowning all the time

All day long I think of things
But nothing seems to satisfy
Think I'll lose my mind
If I don't find something to pacify

Can you help me
Occupy my brain?
Oh yeah

I need someone to show me
The things in life that I can't find
I can't see the things that make true happiness
I must be blind

Make a joke and I will sigh
And you will laugh and I will cry
Happiness I cannot feel
And love to me us so unreal

And so as you hear these words
Telling you now of my state
I tell you to enjoy life
I wish I could but it's too late

I sure would be...

So you have US marshals on the plane.. but they all do nothing.. probably waiting for the Syrian men to scream JiHad and rush to the cockpit.. Meanwhile.. terrorists have all the freedom in the world to assemble a bomb in mid-air... and blow the plane..

The story is a bit strange however... while all this activity going on.. passengers scare to death.. No man stood up and say "WHat the fuck are you doing!?" That flight needed some rednecks from Texas!!

jade_dragon 07-17-2004 11:42 AM

That story makes me sad and also questions my faith in the intelligence and greater feeling of community we as Americans or just plain humans are supposed to have. There is NO way after 911 that ANY man, woman or child, yellow, brown, black, white, purple or green should be allowed to act suspiciously in any group of people ESPECIALLY in a guidable jet fueled air craft (missile). They were VERY LUCKY they made it off, to me it sounded like there was more than enough evidence for a rational thinking adult to believe that without action there would be no safe landing. If I saw 14 suspicious anythings get on a plane I am not getting on, sorry....missed the flight, also as a civic minded person I would immediately notify anyone I could about things and try to delay the taking off of the plane as my duty to fellow humans to look out for the greater good. A police officer can at any time ask you a few friendly questions about something, a citizen can do the same, in this situation it is safe to say that if they were going to kill you they are going to kill you for asking why certain things are happening, but you have a much better chance of surviving or at least having others survive if you say something early. Sorry but the sky marshals would just have to arrest me for standing up and asking why it is 14 "strangers" are now acting a cohesive unit to my fellow passangers. What good is the "wait and see" attitude? Yeah it all worked out this time but they will have nothing to say but what amounts to "sorry" for your family had the guys done something to kill those people.

This all reminded me of a huge question I had about people and scary situations. 4 planes get hijacked, 3 get to their targets and 1 did not. How is it that a minimal amount of people could cause so many people to sit there and die, and why did the people on the last plane have what it took to fight back? How many lived did they save if that plain was meant to strike another target. THEY are as much a hero to me as the firemen that when into the buildings. I know people are going to say "well you do not know how you would react till you are in the situation" maybe growing up in New Orleans and seeing so much plus an upbringing to be strong and smart has armed me against fear, but common sense will say this. Sitting there holding your wife and kid because your wife is crying and now your kid is scared is not going to save your life. One of the only mancho American ideals I will EVER keep is "It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees" If you see something like this STAND UP and do something, sometimes it only takes the courage of one person to bring about courage in others it is called a Leader or Hero. Sky marshals MAY have been there and MAY not have been but I am not going to put my life in the hands of MAYBE. For all you know she is telling you that so that you sit there passive and do not "scare" people into doing something because she is trained to do that. This just shakes my faith in people more and definitely tells me that amongst us there are leaders and there are followers I will never follow someone to my death if I can lead others to life

Done ranting now.

exactly.. its not even about race.. its about acting suspiciously.. The men could have been white.. US marshals should have intervened..

you would have been the first jumping up and screaming "racial profiling, racial profiling" if they had, and nothing was found

sid375 07-17-2004 12:34 PM

read the story , one thing I find very strange, why would the man with the goatee , who had been speaking arabic with his friends the whole time call this "hijack/bombing" off by saying "no" in english ? don't make sense , seems to me this lady has to much imagination , ....

uh... you seem to know me better than I do..

I have nothing against profiling based on look... Custom agents have always used profiling based on look when detrmining who they will search or not... There's no other way to do it.. Its very very rare that custom agents at the canadian-us border for exemple will do a full search on a white familly with 3 kids in the back of the mini-van... However, if you are 4 guys looking like hells angels in an old mini-van.. chances are you'll get searched ..

And why people with suspect look are outraged when getting profiled based on look..? Those people think they a have a Right at an equal chance Not to get searched and maybe get away with something..?? Why the nonsense? If you have nothing to hide. what do you care if the custom agent look in your bag.. We are not talking about a rectal search here...

And as I mentionned in my last post... suspect behaviors should ALWAYS be investigated... In the article, I think it was clearly established that the behaviours of those men were HIGHLY suspicious... and yes look IS a factor... like frequent trips the bathroom in groups or having a weird long objetc wrapped in a towel or something...

don't make sense? lol.. Yeah.. so you just caught the woman laying Sherlock!!

As for her imagination... she described what she saw... Unless she is clinicly paranoid.. thats what happened.. What you make of the events is the result of your imagination/deduction...
