I don't think .eu will do great, why should it do better than .biz or .info ? I mean, even .net and .org never reached the popularity of .com, why should any new ending have a different fate ?

For seach engines the domain name stopped to be important quite a time ago...

Preregistration is dumb.
Paid AND free ones.

The free ones steal your idea and try to get the good ones. The paid ones run away to the Bahama's with your money.
