Anyone ever done a background check on someone?

Do you really find credible information available? or is it hyped?

Can anyone recommend a good service to use?

ANY type of background check.....

I see services like......

http://www.netdetective.net

and there are many others. They say you can find out what sites your neighbors surfing. They even say you can find out if the feds have a file on you. Im just curiuos to see if anyone has ever tried any of these services for any reason, and if they really dish up what they say they serve.

Just curious to know if anyone has tried any of these services and were they helpful to you?

Yea, equifax is great for checking someones credit, but im talking about a complete background check.

volante 07-16-2004 12:09 AM

I used to be a private investigator when I lived in England - although I dealt mostly with missing persons cases, background checks were one of the services the company I worked for offered.

What do you want to know? I might still remember what to do :winkwink:

erehwon 07-16-2004 12:09 AM

Yes...

Do you really find credible information available? or is it hyped?

Depends on the scope of the backround investigation you want on someone, is it for credit, criminal backround, professional certifications. You also have to consider who is doing the check, is it being run by some fly-by-night information broker, or are you using former Defense Security Service investigators who will call and verify the employment history on this party's resume, call the neighbors, etc, etc, etc.

Can anyone recommend a good service to use?

You get what you pay for, I use a service made up of former Govt investigators, I can sleep well at night knowing the information gathered by these guys is rock soild.

I want to find a credible service. I DONT want a service who will take my credit card number and then want to charge me more, or not have access to the info i need.

Again thanks for the reply.

Just about any agency will be able to offer a fairly comprehensive background check - getting most of the information is so easy, people would be amazed at just how much information is readily available about them (I used to get information from supposedly confidential medical records just by phoning up hospitals and asking the right questions).

Get out your yellow pages and phone a few agencies to see what they offer - stick with ones that claim to have a law enforcement/federal background and you should do fine.

It depends on what kind of info you are looking for and what kind of information you already have. The state in which you live is also a factor. For example, are you looking for an unlisted phone number or someone's criminal history? Do you have there SSN or full legal name and date of birth? Is it for an adoption case, dead-beat parent, civil litigation, criminal action, etc?

What are you trying to find out?

Its just too easy to blame the intelligence community for the executive branch fucking up, they wanted to hear that Iraq was a threat and that's what they got.

I'm sure you promote and sell some really really shitty programs, but with a little sexing up, people will still buy them once.

I have used this particular group in the past for my non-adult businesses, they are not 'some secretive orginazation' however I think they would prefer a little discretion in not being posted on an adult webmasters forum.

From your general tone, it appears you're searching for the McDonalds of backround investigations, just keep this old adage in the back of your mind from Bell Helmets.

Put a $10 helmet on a $10 head. :1orglaugh

Its actually quite amazing how much stuff you can find on people if you try. Two years ago I was going through a divorce and my wife at the time was trying to take all my shit and my kid. I sure the fuck didnt want to go through a long court battle nor did I want to leave my fate up to some judge so I figured the only way to get her to back down was to pull up dirt on her boyfriend. All I had to start with was his first name and an unlisted phone number.
From the phone number I was able to get his full name and address. And from that I was able to get his social security number, his criminal record, his complete divorce records, his driving record, and his employment history. I found out he had recently got a DUI and was driving without a license (with my kid sometimes) and that his ex wife accused him of being abusive.

So after getting it all together I told my wife what I knew and I would agressively use this against her. She completely backed off and agreed to everything I wanted. Damn, I should start a business helping guys that are getting divorced now that I think about it.

Anyway, to answer your question. The software programs are junk, don't waste your money. Use a service like http://intelius.com

Depending on what you want you may have to use a few different information brokers. Some may bend the law a little and give you stuff they shouldnt, but those are the ones to use.

reynold 07-16-2004 03:17 AM

one question? Why do you even want to know? And who's background are you checking anyway?

pure energy 07-16-2004 04:15 AM

hey it always feels creepy knowing some people have the capability to check on somebody else...isn't that invasion of privacy already?
