Couple arreted for wearing anti-Bush shirts

A husband and wife who wore anti-Bush T-shirts to the president?s Fourth of July appearance aren?t going down without a fight: They will be represented by lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union as they contest the trespassing charges against them Thursday morning in Charleston Municipal Court.

Police took Nicole and Jeff Rank away in handcuffs from the event, which was billed as a presidential appearance, not a campaign rally. They were wearing T-shirts that read, ?Love America, Hate Bush.?

Spectators who wore pro-Bush T-shirts and Bush-Cheney campaign buttons were allowed to stay.

?We weren?t doing anything wrong,? said Jeff Rank. The couple, who said they had tickets just like everybody else, said they simply stood around the Capitol steps with the rest of the spectators.

?We sang the national anthem,? Rank said.

Land of the free, not under Bush. :(

Phoenix 07-14-2004 03:14 PM

haha...that is just pathetic

Tom_PMs 07-14-2004 03:14 PM

Completely shameful, and totally unsurprising.

BradM 07-14-2004 03:19 PM

A country built on free speech. Unless you say something someone doesn't like.

candyflip 07-14-2004 03:20 PM

They aren't allowed to move them out of the way, so it's easier to just arrest them. Goddam this administration is out of control. :helpme

Joesho 07-14-2004 03:21 PM

Bush sucks, :2 cents:

Corleone 07-14-2004 03:22 PM

welcome the land of the free..

free speech for everyone

crockett 07-14-2004 03:22 PM

I'm all about hatin Bush , but lets see a more reputable news source on this.

Dirty F 07-14-2004 03:22 PM

Yet they keep screaming Land of the free everywhere and anytime they can. Totally clueless.

Fizzgig 07-14-2004 03:22 PM

Only one couple was wearing them?

We americans have learned that it's wisest to fear the bush government.

Bush has no scruples.

Danny_C 07-14-2004 03:34 PM

Dirty hippies should all be in jail. Free speech is great, but it's only meant for those who agree with the president... and even then, only when it's a Republican president. Don't you guys know anything about the Constitution?

This has been reported from various sources. Do some searching. They were also talking about this on Air America Radio.

GatorB 07-14-2004 03:40 PM

Bush is a pussy who can't take criticism. Hell Bush is trying to use terro as an excuse to not have the elections. Let's see we managed to have election durring the fucking Civil War but we can't in 2004 because Ossama might bomb something? Whose fault is it that this guy is still loose? We found Saddam in what 9 months? And Iraq is MUCH larger than Afghanistan.

QualityMpegs 07-14-2004 03:47 PM

I hope their lawyers can do something about it...that's really fucked

sickkittens 07-14-2004 03:50 PM

Land of the free my arse.

Chichio 07-14-2004 03:51 PM

pretty horrible. I hope they win and are given money for pain and sufferring.

genomega 07-14-2004 03:54 PM

Your memories are shorter than your dicks. Folks were dragged off from Clinton speeches just for asking a question.

Henry Rollins said it best. " we are not the land of the free. we are the land of the privilaged and privilages can be removed."

bopha 07-14-2004 04:09 PM

I love Henry. I've seen his spoken word several times. He was much more inspiring before he got a SAG card though.

oh well...

KRL 07-14-2004 04:12 PM

That is seriously wrong and dictatorship like.

jade_dragon 07-14-2004 04:33 PM

This is how it was probably done:

They are standing on private property

Those who have control of private property have the right to ask you to leave said property for any reason ANY reason
If you do not leave when asked you are tresspassing

When you tresspass police can be called and will ask you to leave

If you do not leave peacefully they will remove you by force

If you resist you will be removed and arrested.

Playing devil's advocate, perhaps they were removed for their own safety? Look how heated people get here about things, think of what could have happened if some hot head saw them and wanted to show off or get a chip off his shoulder? Anyway the easy counter to their 1st amandment rights being taken is that they were asked to leave private property then resisted police intervention, any lawyer worth anything will play on that.

I'd be inclined to say that could be possible. Reminds me of the people who screwed onstage 'for the rainforest'. Publicity for the cause. I guess we'll never know exactly why.

BRISK 07-14-2004 04:40 PM

:(

NoHassleSteve 07-14-2004 04:46 PM

Left or right.. anyone with the police on their side wins.

These guys made a hobby out of going to peace rallies... and then filming it as the "peaceful" and "tolerant" people would get violent and intolerant at the sight of shirts and posters they didn't like:

http://www.protestwarrior.com/

Best we can hope for is that with enough media outlets
and websites out there... The Big "Middle" in America will know what the far left and far right are up to and never fully trust either one :)

GonePhishing 07-14-2004 04:53 PM

BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD said it best in his song: For what it's worth

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side

It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

Welcome to the USSR!

Tho... na, that would be a gross injustice to the USSR :winkwink:

When the fuck are US folks gonna wake up, get real and take their country back? The place has been highjacked by "terrorists" who tell them that "we will protect you from evil" and all look on in awe and show due reverence, despite they are totally fucked in the ass by every damned law under the sun. All total crap...

I hear there is a law to prohibit thinking - they call it "conspiracy"....

you ain't kidding devil's advocate.

same devil spin they told when they decided to quelch legal protest by establishing free-speech-zones. fabulous idea. make it so protesters are quarantined conveniently out of the president's sight. that way if he doesn't see the dissent, there is no dissent. Even when 11 million people are dissenting. :thumbsup
