Tom_PMs 07-14-2004 09:37 AM

They all installed for me this morning without any noticeable problem.

fishy 07-14-2004 09:40 AM

But why are they all CRITICAL? I mean everytime you see a headline like "MS releases CRITICAL shit! Download immediately!". Sounds like if you won't download it right away, you'll computer will go nuts and start sharing your files with the world. Will it?

rowan 07-14-2004 09:41 AM

The amount of regular holes discovered in XP and/or IE is shocking. It's really getting beyond a joke. I have over 20 hotfixes listed under add/remove programs, and that's still a selective install only!

Critical means that the hole is serious enough that someone could widely exploit it.

Has anyone found out what the hell this one is yet?

Fizzgig 07-14-2004 03:17 PM

Microsoft should implement that treat rating system like the US has for terrorist attacks.
:1orglaugh

It'd be constantly in "the red".

Ok not defending Microsfot but the reason why you get more IE/Windows problems is because that's what 95% of peole use. peole act as if Linux or Mozilla never have issues. What hacker is going to make a virus for something hardly anyone uses? trust me if Mozillia was used by20% or more internet users the flaws in would become VERY appearant.

Linux? Can the average person use that? Is that an OS the average person can use without a great learning curve. I'm asking I've never used it. Remember a lot people don't even know how to re-set their home page or change the monitor resolution without help.

AgentCash 07-14-2004 03:35 PM

No the reason for more holes is sloppy coding and no widespread peer review of the source code. Apache on Linux is the most popular webserver so saying Linux isn't being attacked because it's hardly being used is pure fallacy.

Well if your waiting for Bill Gates to give everyone his source code then keep waiting it isn't going to happen.

As far as the other I was refering more to other web broswers than Linux, but as to that how many use Linux at HOME? What % of home computers are using something other than Windows as on OS?

AgentCash 07-14-2004 04:34 PM

I wouldn't want Billy's source. There are plenty of much more capable operating systems out there which offer source access. I was simply pointing out that your argument doesn't hold water.

The figures that I've seen for Linux use at home generally are in the 2%-3% range. I suggest you pick up a copy and try it out. You can get a LiveCD distribution such as Knoppix and boot it directly off the CD. You don't have to install it on your hard drive to test it out.

There are tons of choices when you step into the open source realm, and that is what helps protect it, and is also most overwhelming at first. The problem with switching operating systems, is change scares most people. They become entrenched in their ways of thinking and doing things.
