Why hasn't the U.N. been dismantled?
It's a joke with veto powers.
Cheers, Matt |
Because without giving veto powers to the superpowers then those countries will leave and the UN will be dismanteled.

i was hoping for a well thought out argument

Why do you write
Cheers, Matt at the end of all your posts? |

But then, not everyone cares about looking weird. I used to do it too, when I was on AWI and signatures were off, but it really has become pointless over time. |
WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED
to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom, AND FOR THESE ENDS to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours, and to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples, HAVE RESOLVED TO COMBINE OUR EFFORTS TO ACCOMPLISH THESE AIMS |
Phoenix - The arguments have been made by many already, exists in lots of literature.
BRISK - Sure, okay. TeenGodFather - I'm sure seeing the "You have this person on ignore. Click here to view their response." would be more annoying. Lane - Well if you're trying to get people to change from what you prefer / from being weird (or different than the norm) then you might as well go after Juicy for his bright and colourful smiley in his signature... Not trashing you, you are usually well spoken, and i wanted more then just the few words you tossed out there. What has set you off? i happen to think we are going to see an even larger presence from the UN as world government is the only possible salvation for us. |

There is also "disagreement" over the ICJ - the rogue regimes in this world clearly don't need any International Court of Justice (or International Criminal Court), telling em how it is. The UN represents the International Community - whether some like it or not. Each member state is has a say - if they don't like it, quit using "excuses" and piss off out of the "International Community". :winkwink: |

And I agree with you that something larger will happen, it will have to happen. Never thought you were trashing me either. Not sure why everyone thinks I'm being attacked. Cheers, Matt |

It's 180 something perspectives, motivations, religious ideaologies and political agenda's that never mesh on any real problem. |
Probably, even though I don't like the UN, and believe the structure lends it to be almost irrelevant b/c of the security council veto power...it is still an important tool for keeping the world enganged.
The U.S. can be too heavy handed at times, and the U.N. allows some form of moderation. I think the war in Iraq has shown how important a bit of moderation can be, if only to force countries to be accountable to display their rational. Unfortunately, the U.N. only has any sort of say with regards to the U.S., b/c they are really the only nation who considers any sort of moral authority to rectify global problems. Therefore, the U.S. will actually LISTEN and try to present a case to the U.N. and not just try to steam role their puppet authority. So, in absence of the cold war superpower (that the U.S. would think about before engaging in any war outside S. america), the U.N. serves as a role almost like a priest... they can only condemn you or bless you, but can't help you or hurt you. Oh yeah, you can buy their blessing as well. Never the less, it is always good to be reminded that other people are watching wha tyou do. Pleasurepays-- that's also why the EU as a political union won't do shit. :) Quote:
