Why is marijuana illegal in the USA? I don't get it

I don't smoke cigarettes or marijuana but I really don't understand why its illegal? Really what does it hurt? I'm less afraid of a crowd of stoned people than I am a crowd of drunk people. The gov't could tax the fuck out of it like they do everything else so why is it illegal? Why did it become illegal in the first place?

I don't know.. considering pot is the main ingredient in 99% of teen movies, and probably as many teens have smoked joints there's no reason. Media is free to portray smoking as normal and then you wonder why teens smoke.

Doesn't bother me. Illegal or not, I'm quite a few miles from us borders.

It really pisses me off why Alcohol is legal, which is a cause of MANY auto accidents, deaths, fights, etc. Mariuana is illegal and all it has caused people to do was laugh their asses off, listen to music, and fall asleep! I guess the government made it illegal because it can't be taxed and most of it comes from other countries. Interesting eh?! I love these commercials that say "oh he was too busy getting stoned" Don't blame the weed, BLAME THE PERSON BEING IRRESPONSIBLE!!! I fucking hate the government! WHy don't they make commercials "He was too busy getting DRUNK!!"

Yes. See I don't get the demonization of it as well. Its not that bad but they try to make it sound like some kid is a heroin addict. There has been a huge anti-drug campaign against marijuana targeting teenagers as long as I can remember.

See I'm not all up on the details but why not make it legal for purchase but only inside specific shops.(I think Amsterdam works kind of like this right)

The textile industry, paper industry, tobacco industry, and most of all the booze industry.

Do a little research and you will see. They have a stronghold and if marijuana/hemp was legal their profits would drop.

Ironically George Washington our "founding father" was a hemp farmer.

The thing that makes me curious as well is that it's a weed. A seed hits the dirt, it grows, and you can burn it when it's dry. Thats about it.

No "labs", no chemicals, no processing.. Thats why it's a weird thing to be classified like other processed drug-company style controlled substances.

I guess most adults alive today have tried it at some point. Probably if sentances were handled by actual Juries, they would be much lighter. I know if I was on a jury and realised that most armed robbers get lighter sentances than a kid with a bag of a weed, I'd think long and hard about simple common sense before handing down a sentance..

A lot of it goes back 2 the 20's or 30's

Killer weed

that's what was portrayed in the movie

major companys lobby with tons of $$$$ to keep it illegal

philip morris, anheuser busch, and pfizer all contribute HUGE amounts of funds to keep it illegal. they are worried that if it ever was made legal that it would cut deep into there pockets.

they are 100% correct.

Basic_man 07-09-2004 09:51 AM

It's almost legal here in canada :D

True, drug companies also dont work on developing cures from organic sources because they can't patent it and sell it unless they *make* it.

Funny thing right now is a guy is out mowing the lawns here in his riding mower. I heard a loud WHAM WHAM WHAM so I look outside down on him and I see he has an open beer in his cupholder. He's fucking mowing while drinking and theres 50 to 75 little kids that live in this complex.. fucked up I tell you.

Also illegal. I should call the cops right now.

cherrylula 07-09-2004 10:01 AM

And as I watch tv at night, all they show is fucking commercials for pills.

Whatever the target audience, old ladies, impotent men, distraught moms with psycho teenagers, there is a pill that all of them need.

And its illegal to grow your own weed even to just make some goddamn tea to put you to sleep. But no, they would rather you spend hundreds and thousands on doctor bills and prescription meds so they can pad their pockets.

I can't wait til Sicko is released.

M_M 07-09-2004 10:09 AM

I support weed being illegal only if they can strictly enforce it.

I don't wanna see it illegal and see bunch of stoners in the next party at the same time.

I'm also against the speed limits if they dont put cameras in every corner.

It's all about fairness. This is not the wild west where you should be able to do all the shit you want as long as you dont get caught.

it's not legal for 2 main reasons.

1) the people feel it is important and who want to legalize it, are unorganized, pathetic and have no real hope of getting their shit together anytime soon as a credible political force to cause change.

2) the issue is not important enough to anyone that does not smoke a lot of pot to care.

why is Howard Stern going off the air?

Because Howard Stern fans are the perfect demographic to not do anything about it.

Exactly, the baby boomer generation was exposted to BILLIONS $'s in ads making them believe that if they smoke pot they will become crazy, kill people, do other hardcore drugs, become a bum, and die.

100% fear mongering.....reminds me of the war on terror and Iraq...go figure.

it's all about the money folks.. pretty cut and dry. They allow alchohol and cigarettes (both of which are detrimental to your health)..but they havent allowed the Mari-jane because they have no way of regulating and taxing it yet..plus it would put alot of the pharmaceutical companies out of business with all their fucking insane pills for every ailment in and out of the books...many of which would be cured if peoplewould smoke a blunt :2 cents:

Tobacco, alcohol, etc. have lobbying groups that actually do something.

Where is the marijuana lobby? They would probably go to Washington, then miss their meting with a congressman because they are too busy out in the parking lot playing hackey.
