Are song lyric sites legal?
 

Whenever I want the lyrics to a song, I type it in Google and a million links pop up. These sites are full of pop-ups and spyware and are annoying as hell to navigate.

I was thinking of buidling my own...but I don't see how it could be legal to post copyrighted song lyrics on the web. How do these sites get away with it? Is it the celeb site method? Run the sites until you get a cease and desist from a lawyer?

No, they're not legal.

But unless you become super huge and attract millions of visitors daily, you won't have a problem.

The site I have in mind would definitely get me sued. Too bad.

Legal until you make money. In Japan it is considered appropriate since American songs are considered to be inappropriate.

I tend to search for lyrics on a regular basis. I'm under the impression that all of these sites use the same script to run their sites.

I always hated those lyrics site that circle jerk you aroun. I have posted a few of my favorite songs lyrics on one of my non-adult sites at Jamdin's Dream Realms

They aren't considered legal from what I have heard. Some of them get by, by saying they are only hosting what submitters send in...and that it is more of a forum than a archive site.

OLGA gets by with hosting guitar tabs, most with the lyrics on there. Not sure how they get away with it.

lyrics.ch used to be an awesome/clean lyrics site that got a lot of traffic. But one day several years ago they posted where a special forces team busted into their house (whatever country they were in) and seized all their servers. The domain has been bought by songtext.net now, but the lyrics.ch site has never been online since.
