Just found out my mother...
 

...is in the early stages of Emphysema. How long does it take to kill a person? I am trying to prepare myself. Is it long and drawn out or does it go pretty quick? I hate to sound morbid but I don't want her to suffer.

I feel sorry to hear that friend.. but I think it depends of the person and how advanced the Emphysema is..

I don't know how fast it will be to take your mom away but sad to say, the figures is rising regarding the number of death of ephysema.

My husband just died of emphysema a few months ago.. I know a lot about it

One thing I know is.. it can be arrested if you quit smoking early enough, it won't go away but it won't get worse.. didn't your mom's doctor say anything about that?

sorry to hear that man. I can take many many years to kill someone. so take some comfort that you may not lose her soon, but thats not much comfort. I wish you and your family well and much luck in your hard times.

If they found it early they can treat it and slow it down as well as make the person comfortable. I would say if they really got it early it will be many years before it would get the best of her.

Thanks everyone for the kind words again. She smoked for like 20 years but quit like 20 years ago. I guess it's just now catching up with her.

Geez, that's sad. Well, the best you can do is to be beside her till her last (I'm sorry) day, and tell her all the things that you want to say, you can cry in front of her, she's you mother anyway. Believe me she'll be thankful you stayed beside her.:)
