Florida teacher arrested on charges of having sex with 14-year-old student


udpate July 1-- More information is coming out about a Tampa, Florida area teacher accused of having sex with a 14-year old student. Provocative photos of 23-year old Debra Lafave taken five years ago have surfaced on the Internet. The photos came from the pages of "Makes & Models" magazine. They were brought to light by a morning radio disc jockey in Tampa.

William Ballinger, publisher of the magazine, said Lafave had just turned 18-years old when she arrived at his office for the photo shoot. Dr. Sheila Katt-Beck said the recently found photos makes the healing process for all parties involved that much tougher to get through.

Lafave is facing charges in Hillsborough and Marion County for five counts of lewd and lascivious sex acts with a minor. The Hillsborough County school board will decide in a few weeks whether to suspend Lafave without pay.

original story June 30-- (Tampa, Florida-AP) -- A middle-school teacher in Florida has been charged with having sex with a 14-year-old student.

Police in Tampa say Debra Beasley Lafave had sex with the boy in a classroom, her apartment and in her SUV while the boy's 15-year-old cousin drove.

Her lawyer had no comment.

The boy told investigators that he and Lafave got to know each other during a class trip last month. She allegedly told him that her months-old marriage was in trouble, and she was attracted to him because having sex with him was forbidden. Their sexual relationship allegedly began June third.

Lafave had been teaching reading. She worked with the Hillsborough County school system for two years. Now she's on administrative duty and could be suspended without pay.
