20 year old women dies when tryin to avoid hitting turtle with car

Sebring woman dies after turning car to avoid turtle

Associated Press

INDIANTOWN, Fla. - A 20-year-old woman who veered her car to avoid a turtle flipped the vehicle several times and died Tuesday, Florida Highway Patrol officials said.

Rachel Marie Martin of Sebring was traveling southeast on State Road 710 between Indiantown and Okeechobee in western Martin County when she suddenly turned away from a turtle crossing the roadway, according to an FHP report. The car overturned and landed in the middle of the road.

A passenger, 19-year-old Julie Christine Evans of Tampa, was treated and released from a local hospital. Martin's 1999 Oldsmobile SUV was totaled.

Authorities said Martin was wearing her seat belt and that alcohol was not involved in the crash.

she wouldn't of flipped in a car most likely... when will people learn ya just can't slalom with a truck?

sad story indeed

Damn. It's a tough split second decision to make, I would guess that most people would instinctively swerve if they saw any object (that the car wouldn't clear) on the road.

Now that I think about it, clearing a turtle wouldn't be all that hard, unless it was a huge bitch.

You might need to swerve slightly so your wheels don't hit it as you pass over, but you don't need to steer away from it completely...

oh my god, that's so sad:( , life is one big surprise:Oh crap

Its easy to tell yourself no to swerve , its very hard to actually do it.

I totalled a brand new chevy because of a squirrel.

I wasn't paying attention and talking to the back seat , and this squirrel popped out on the road , and my brain told my hands to turn the wheel , without me even thinking about it. Needless to say i caught one wheel in the ditch and rolled it down a 9 foot embankment. All i broke was my beer bottles.

I have threatened to kill my wife before for doing such a thing. A kid, person etc I can understand, but not a wild animal.

I know it is hard sometimes not to, but if you clearly know what it is and have choice, do not risk killing yourself or someone else. :2 cents:

:( what a sad story

Deepai 07-01-2004 12:46 PM

Most likely cause SUV's are soo easy to flip in the first place, but sad nevertheless!:(

Women can drive and turtles can't cross the road...old news.

Basic_man 07-01-2004 12:53 PM

I've had about 3 close calls with small animals, and in all cases my immediate reaction was based on instinct rather than a considered decision. In the heat of the moment I really don't think you have time to do that before your basic motor skills take over.

Two of the animals were just to the right side of my car (drivers side in AU) so all I had to do was swerve slightly, but I thought that a cat that ran laterally across my front was a goner for sure. I had my foot stomped on the brake but I lost sight of him because of the bonnet. A moment later he came back into view, still running, unhurt... the fright probably claimed one of his nine lives though!

Kind of ironic that people buy SUVs because they think they are safer. They say don't swerve for anything the size of a dog or smaller.

Moral of the story: hit the fucking turtle!

Seriously, I hit a squirel once and I freaked like a little girl. I stopped the car and went searching for the damn thing. I'm pretty sure I squashed it's hind legs but when I looked again it was gone.
