Netting 100-140k/month

Cool story from webmasterworld

My wife and I had a baby back in October 2003, and I timed the sale of my previous site with the new arrival in order to have lots of free time, etc.
After a few months I got bored so I started a new site just as a part-time thing so I had something to do and also of course to make some extra cash.
As luck would have it, the new site turned out to be my most profitable project yet, and now after about 7 months it is netting around 100-140k per month. I have 4 employees, etc. etc. and it has just become out of control and I can barely keep up.

So now I'm thinking of selling the site. It's a real cash cow, but again it's only 7 months old. Do I have any chance of selling the site with only a 7 month history?

My first thought was to just hang on as long as I can, until the site is at least 1 year old. But it's a fairly competitive industry and I fear that if I neglect the site too much the revenues and profits could drop quite a bit which would be a real waste. But I can barely keep up with the business and it's starting to stress me out.

Obviously there is no shortage of people who would love to "partner" up with me, and take over the day to day operations of the site and split the profits with me. But I've been screwed so many times in the past that I'm leary to do that. The last thing I want is to turn the site over to someone else and have them screw it up, only to have to take it back and try to salvage what's left of it.

Truthfully at this point I'm more inclined to sell it really cheap just to pocket what I can and count my blessings until I'm ready for the next project.

I don't have a whole lot of experience with selling sites though and I'm just wondering if you guys/gals think I could actually sell a site that's only 7 months old, and what kind of price I might be able to get for it?

Some basic info about the site ... The site sells a single digital product - basically access to a members only website (that no longer needs updating). The 4 "employees" are really independent contractors who work remotely from home. They handle most of the day to day stuff i.e. customer service etc. and would stay on with a new owner.

Anyway, what would you guys/gals suggest I do? This is all new to me and I really don't know what to do. My previous sites have never made more than 20k per month so this is a whole new ballgame for me. On one hand I'm tempted to hang on as long as I can and pocket as much cash as possible, but on the other hand the responsibility, stress, etc. is becoming too much to handle and it's not worth it.

what's wrong with wanting to spend time with your new baby, especially after making 3 quarters of a million?

strobi 06-30-2004 04:27 PM

No one would sell something like that.:2 cents:

Would you drop a 1,5 mill net income/year site to spend more time with your baby? You can hire a competent team to run that stuff. And have oodles of cash left to spend.

Exactly. With the info that he gave from his last ventures. He was already in the money. So I bet he has himself invested very well so him making the extra 120k a month is more of a pain than its probly worth.

Noone will buy a paysite for 3 years income.
If anything, then type-in domains are priced that way in this biz, but nothing else.

Ah, and maybe The Hun would be too, but definitely not a NEW paysite.

People sell for lots of crazy reasons, I agree with the Shemp. Get a reputable organization involved to handle the managing and day to day operations of the site. Unless of course someone comes in with a crazy offer, then sell it :thumbsup

most income from from recurring. if you are selling access to a members area which does not need updating then you are not doing much recurring.

and if the numbers are real, only a crazy person would sell.

INSTANT BULLSHIT: you can NEVER have enough money for all the things you want!! :glugglug And money can buy time. Its not that hard to hire trained professionals to do the job for you. train them for a month and let them loose on it and retire.

what makes you believe this person anyway? I don't get it??

He's trying to say he's made all this money on a site that's only 7 months old.. and then comes across as an innocent newbie who doesn't know what to do so he's asking for advice?

doesn't add up
