What to do with a bored 15 year old?

I have a 15 year old brother with a brand new computer, he's bored and wants money. "Getting a job" isn't really an option due to several things I want get into. I wish he was 18 so I could have some great slave labor, BUT he's not so I'm shit out of luck there.

What could I have him doing that would make him money? Or better yet, make both of us money? I haven't messed with mainstream stuff in years so am not really sure what's making money and what isn't.

Any suggestions? Anyone have mainstream projects they could use help with?

OzMan 06-30-2004 11:45 AM

Help him get a job at Mcdonalds etc.
Then he will see what crap he will have to put up with if he doesn't finish school/college. :thumbsup

Get him mailing ringtones.

dropped9 06-30-2004 11:47 AM

Get him learning some programming skills... By the time he is 18 you will have a nice tech on your hands.......

fudpuck 06-30-2004 11:49 AM

Have him start a site about something he enjoys. Someting he can add content too, or blog on, etc. Then put Google Adsense links on it...and let him run for a while.

CAHEK 06-30-2004 11:49 AM

ask him to drop out of school :)

I think the issue is that hes a minor and sly doesn't wanna corrupt him just yet. at least in the eyes of the law....

I second this. If he's a creative type, he might be very interested in learning what he can do with Photoshop.

The ringtone sites are also a good idea, but have him learn how to design them himself. That'll keep him busy for days.

Odie 06-30-2004 11:57 AM

teach him photoshop and programming..that way he'll be ready to do whatever you want him to do when he's 18..:winkwink:

Sarma 06-30-2004 11:58 AM

Buy him a good book? :1orglaugh
I have the same problem, my cousin is 15 so no beer for him :(

Tam 06-30-2004 12:00 PM

I have a 15 yr old son that is learning flash and design stuff..... he took a course in school and loved it. He's doing pretty damn good too and by the time he gets REALLY good, I plan to have him work for me designing and such.... providing he keeps it up that is.

All of my kids are very good on a computer. My 10 yr old is learning how to fix their computer when it screws up, so he is heading to a techie kind of thing, he likes knowing the inside/outside of things......

My kids have always been around computers and by the time they get older, it seems that this is the way of the future, so I want them to be pretty self sufficient and trained on them.... and I must say I am quite impressed with their skills. Have had teachers call me from school just to tell me how well they know computers and have even taught them a few things...... thank god for early preparation. lol

I thought about buying some stuff wholesale and have him sell them on eBay and at school. Stuff like trendy clothes and accessories. Might still do that, I just don't want to be stuck with a couple grand worth of merchandise if he flakes on me.

Ross 06-30-2004 12:11 PM

To be honest I would make him get a normal job. Teach him some basics and respect of working for someone. Then when he is 18 he will respect you and your business.

once he sees he can make money that easy... i doubt he will flake too hard.... you can always sell the stuff yourself.

Maybe start with him selling his own stuff first..like vid games and shit around the house that he or the family doesnt use anymore.

Programming / design work - always in demand

Jdoughs 06-30-2004 12:21 PM

If he wants to learn something..

Get him to figure out SEO.

Alot of people have no clue and if he can get a grasp on it...his knowledge will be extremely valueble.

You guys don't seem to understand. He can't get a "normal job", nobody will hire him. He's physically disabled and doesn't have enough strength to do any sort of manual labor. Typing is about it, and that's fairly hard in itself.

Ebay is probably the best option. He can package and ship stuff out without too many problems. He'll just get our 8 year old brother to be HIS slave, haha.

Well unless I missed it, you didn't mention initially that he was disabled. Give him a shot at all the non adult aspects of your work and see what he takes a liking to whether, design, programming, marketing, SEO etc :)

eroswebmaster 06-30-2004 12:36 PM

as has been mentioned before get him started doing mainstream stuff.

Actually you're wrong. When I was 15 I started my first Internet business.

Tom_PMs 06-30-2004 06:52 PM

Duct tape him to the wall? Just kidding.

Seriously though, nothing says he cant make a webpage or network of webpages as a fan site, or gaming site, or blog site. get those SE spiders working.

Definitely HTML, PHP, PERL, C++, how to admin a server.. Best time to learn new languages is when you're younger.

Then steer him away from your business or he'll control us all eventually! :feels-hot :1orglaugh

pimplink 06-30-2004 10:07 PM

Give him some money or let him sleep over in a friend's house.
