Advertising In Penthouse & other Publications

Well, I think I am going to try advertising my "toy store" in Penthouse. (Actually probably Variations) Has anyone ever done such a foolish thing?

My gawd the rates are high, but I think It just may work. Mags like that sometimes lay around for years..... You know, like when you found your Dad's collection of old smut mags?

Any input would be appreciated. If anyone else is interested, we could probably work some kind of deal with them for a discount. They are real good to talk to over there...

I advertise toys by mail order in the local free ads papers and place them for full UK distribution. I also include the URL to a online list of products. Talk to sites in your country that post real amateurs and wife swapping stuff, this is hot traffic for toys. As for the big mags, I think you will find some really big players have the lions share here.

Yeah going head to head with Adam & Eve in those mags wouldn't be wise. They can down price you to the point that your cash went with the wind. See if you have local 'underground' papers, college newspapers might be good too since we all know college kids are perverts, lol Just look at all of our college kids on the board http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/wink.gif

I was just wondering, what are the advertising rates of penthouse.

anyways, I was thinking about buying out advertising in rolling stones mag.

I think outside ad sucess depends alot on your domain, If it's a simple easy to type in it can do well, but if you promote www.amateurbigtittiedpornpituresite.cz/pics-mag/info.htm you won't do to well!

lynch1000s 03-22-2001 02:23 PM

My ad would look like, I have an easy to remember domain name. Anyways, I don't think that print ads would be the best idea anyways, but maybe
p***s-e*****e.com
increase penis 2-4 inches in months
safely and naturally

remember the dash

Well, here are some rates for the actual magazine. Rates are 4 color process. (per issue, and yes these ARE the real prices... I just about crapped my pants too)

full pg: $40,700
1/2 pg $26,470
1/3 pg $18,320

back cover $61,000
inside fr $46,800
inside bk $44,700

The rates for their smaller publications are much more realistic. $2k-$3k for full page/covers.

I still think it might be worth it. Other people do it, month after month.... why cant i?

OOoohhh shit, thats right, I don't have $60,000... hahahaaaa

Not only are we perverts, but we're all dead sexy, Gem.

Unless you can honestly compete with the really big boys. I don't see it panning out very well right of the bat. Advertising sites in paper, radio, etc. can be tricky. It's becoming more popular all the time tho. The cost factor is what would worry me. My advice would be to start out with free papers (ex. LA WEEKLY here in LA) and then step up to lesser known sex mags and then if you are seeing serious return numbers....go to the big boys. This is not my area of expertise tho, I may be totally wrong, but common sense says test, test, test, get it working as well as you can, get the stats, etc. prior to plunking down $20,000 or whatever. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif

gorfllub 03-22-2001 05:34 PM

Ha.. I wouldnt actually spend that much right off the bat. But I sure would spend 2 or 3 grand on one of their smaller mags.....

MrBrian 03-23-2001 05:31 PM

hustler does ai advertising. its 2k for a 1/10 of a page...sounds kinda pricey when it say it that way lol

Gemini 03-23-2001 05:39 PM

DEAD sexy eh 32? Hmmm, well when I'm dead... You're a good guy tho. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/wink.gif

That kind of change and you could pick up a lot of spots online with advertising. So I stick with you can't compete with Adam & Eve etc. Just now in the new catalog... umm well we don't need to go there. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif

The hubby just brought up a good question. Are you trying to promote some sex toy store where you get 10-20-30% of the cut or are you wholesaling it your self? If you are promoting a percentage store, then why not hug the bowl and drown yourself now. (His wording not mine) lol

Might be worth that sort of cash if you get the total profit but certainly not a percentage store. You'd get tons more hits but why would *I* pay you 25 for something I can get for 15. Better sit down and compare your store pricing versus the big boys. UNLESS you have a Wizzon retainer or a Headless tie. Or p'raps some new stockings that jaYMan has never seen. lmbo

Well, yes, they are affiliate stores, but here is the deal:

I already do $5 grand in sales per month, with very little advertising. Pricing is basically dead-on with anyone else.

Why wouldnt I be able to compete price wise? I advertise for companies that do in excess of $2 million in sales... I am pretty sure that they buy the shit for the same damn price A&E.

If I spend $2k to target 500,000 qualified readers,(the key is targeted) I only need 150 to actually buy something for me to break even (about $54 avg sale per person)
That is a ratio of about 1:2850
I think it is completely feasable.

Plus, porn mags hang around for quite a while....so its like residual advertising.

I definately won't spend $60k though! To start off, I am going to try a network of swinger mags. That should work out well as it is not expensive, and is definately targeted!

Going to try some #900 numbers there too... I will sure let you know how it turns out.

longhair 03-23-2001 09:10 PM

I don't know shit about toy stores or ads in the big mags so this is just a shot in the dark, but...why not target adult magazines with a femal clientele as well as swingers? I don't think there's that many, but I'm under the impression that women buy that stuff more than guys. Do guys really buy toys that much?

gorfllub 03-24-2001 08:59 AM

Actually, about 80% of my sales come from males. (Well, its a guys name on the bill anyhow) Does that mean its a lot of couples? wives/girlfriends using their mans card?

I dunno, but you may be right. If not, there are a lot of guys who like dildos!

That may be a beeter idea. I am sure it would be cheaper to advertise in a Playgirl type of magazine. Although i guess it would appeal to gay men as well. If I advertised there, I would think about a niche "gay" page for my site prior to that.

But anyway.. do more women actually buy the toys? I really dont think so. I think lots of horny guys buy them for their girlfriends,
hoping to be able to watch them use it....
just my idea
