TECH: What causes slow scrolling pages?

I just set up a brand new machine.

P4 2.8
512m HT
64M video card
2 IDE drives

No programs have been set up yet. Its fresh. All XP pro updates have been done.

The problem is when I scroll web pages with my scroll wheel or manual the page scrolls slow and is very notchy. I used to have a P3 733 that did that, I thought it was due to it being an older, slower machine.

thx,
Ray

Probably a video problem, it's not rendering to the screen properly... which either means you need a new video card driver or a new monitor driver.

A yes, could very well be the monitor driver! That PC is on a 19 LCD and you just reminded me about thhe driver. Thats the first thing I'll try once I get to the office in the morning.

thx MM

WTF is so funny?

Play time is over kiddies. Close the pc and get ready for bed, you have school tomorow.

video card or system resources are getting chewed up by other running programs

not to thread jack but does anyone have real problems with XP home? I've always had XP pro but just bought a dell laptop a week or two ago with home and it seems more buggy

and I'm not sure if it's XP home or my WiFi wireless set up but my folders sometimes really lag when trying to open some on the network. Not sure if upgrading it to XP pro would help that or not

and to answer his question.. yeah it sounds like you don't have all the drivers updated on the new set up, cause that is about what my laptop is and it rocks. Is it a name brand system?

if your using a video card see if there is any new drivers out for it.

crockett 06-29-2004 07:24 PM

hey just in case no one mentioned it try the video card drivers :1orglaugh

but all joking aside..

I had a Radion 9800 that was doing the same thing but was also leaving artifacts all over the screen. I ended up having to RMA it.

have you got "Use smooth scrolling" checked in your IE preferences? That shit is fucking annoying.

Also, check how many lines you have your mouse scrolling size set to.
