Devil Rays are on one hell of a hot streak..... past month has been amazing!

Look at this Yankee payroll. A bunch of All Stars. One of these players can account for half the payroll of certain other teams.

For example how exactly are the brewers suppose to compete?

The AL East

New York 47 26 $ 184,193,950
Boston 42 32 $ 127,298,500
Tampa Bay 37 36 $ 29,556,667
Toronto 33 43 $ 50,017,000
Baltimore 31 41 $ 51,623,333

I would say they are doing extremly well considering the obvious

Money sure helps but it doesn't guarantee a playoff spot or world series appearance.
See the Dodgers and Orioles for references.

I love this
Florida Marlins $ 42,143,042

We beat the yanks last year with a lower payroll than that and we're still in 1st place this year after losing a couple key players (Pudge, Derek Lee,) and the Phillies who spent more than twice what we did on payroll are struggling to keep up.

Its all about pitching, always has been and always will be :thumbsup

If the Marlins, Twins, and Royals can compete then so can the Brewers.
Its not the Yankees fault that the Brewers cut their payroll AFTER they moved into the new stadium that brought them lots of new revenue.

Plus you have to factor in management acumen.
No amount of money can replace picking the right guys in the draft, signing the right foreign prospects, and getting the right players via trades.

The Brewers have made bad choices while the 3 small market teams I mentioned above have made good ones.

Gator 06-29-2004 03:03 PM

Yankees paid more or a little less in luxury tax alone than the last 3 teams to win the World Series (Marlins, Angels, Diamondbacks) whole payroll.

They are a great team for that kind of a payroll

Yankees been to the series 6 out of the last 8 years.

That is as close to a guarantee as a team can get.

Money bought those trips to the series.

kimzar 06-29-2004 03:24 PM

lotta money going around

Jimmie 06-29-2004 04:00 PM

I love this....

Texas Rangers $ 55,050,417

After 3 years finishing last, they trade A-Rod, and suddenly there in first place again! Go Rangers, even if they fall off later in the year!:thumbsup

Yes but the yankees have lots of money AND good management.

Also read what Gator posted above about the yankees luxury tax VS the payrolls of the last 3 world series winners.

In the 90's I was screaming about all this too but I the last labor deal was good and it'll take some time to create more parity.
