NEED The BEST Champagne for $300.

A friend of mine needs to buy champagne for his close friend's wedding and doesn't want to spend more than 300 dollars.

Suggestions, please?

Platinumpimp 06-29-2004 01:22 PM

Bollinger Les Vieilles Vignes Francaises or
Clos Du Mesnil, which is made from 100 percent Chardonnay, it's extraordinary.

JFK 06-29-2004 01:26 PM

Cristal? or buy 3 bottles of Dom :Graucho

Easton 06-29-2004 01:27 PM

$300 per case or for a bottle?

Strife 06-29-2004 01:28 PM

Cristal is the only way to go

Raven 06-29-2004 01:29 PM

Cristal it is...but what year?

Raven 06-29-2004 01:31 PM

You're funny, Easton....this is a per bottle deal...he likes the guy in a hetero kind of way!

strobi 06-29-2004 01:31 PM

I would never spend more than 50 bucks on a bottle of champagne. Don't taste the diffrence. (or I only drink champagne when I'm fucked up allready:winkwink: )

Strife 06-29-2004 01:33 PM

You can get Cristal '96 for about $250/bottle

You guys do know that both Dom Perignon and Cristal are mainly made for export, right? Dom Perignon not as much, but Cristal definately. The only place Cristal is even well known is the US. Makes you wonder why that would be the case when everyone knows that Champagne is always from france. (Cristal being from france too of course.)

I do like Dom Perignon too, its a good champagne, but you can probably get a lot better non-mass-produced champagne for a lot less. You should seriously consider going to a GOOD wine dealer and asking them. And if he comes to you and says "'96 Cristal" then he probably is in it for the money...

No I didn't know that...I'm not a huge fan of champagne...

So, give me a recommend, please...

Bollinger

Nathan 06-29-2004 02:00 PM

Like I said, I would suggest going to a really good wine dealer in your area that seems to know their shit and ask them what they suggest.

I am not sure what champagnes you will be able to get in the US that I would know of, very few very likely since they do not export a lot. It might just be simpler to get a nice Cristal, but you will never know unless you try going to a local wine dealer and talk to them.

And, my apologies for seemingly ignoring what you said, in that vein...but, I know he won't do that; hence, the post on GFY. :)

93 Dom Perignon Rose
92 Dom Perignon (if you can find it)

I prefer both of those over Cristal (96 which is what's generally available). However I prefer the 96 Cristal over 95 Dom Perignon which is what is usually available as far as Dom goes.

To those who say they can't taste the difference between a $20 bottle of Champagne and a good Champagne; there are some who can't tell the difference between Outback Steakhouse and a Morton's or Ruth's Chris. You fall into that category :)

And you can find 95 Dom for about $110-$120 per bottle and 96 Cristal for $175 or so per bottle (in retail locations).

The two at the top will cost you more but if you're looking to spend $300 and can find them, IMO, they're the way to go.

Forget Champagne, get Johny Walker Blue for about $160.00 and an XO cognac for about $100.00 :thumbsup

TMM_John 06-29-2004 02:05 PM

And whatever you do, don't buy Perrier Jouet :throwup

You're right. If it were steak, I'd be in a comfort zone of discussion....:)

Moet White Star is good, around $30 a bottle, for high end best taste go with

Roederer 97 Blanc De Blancs: ~$60

Perrier Jouet 96: ~$100

Veuve Clicquot 96: $58

Those are just some of my recent fav's, Cristal is the "baller" drink but not necessarily the best.

For quantity consumption I go with the Roederer or the White Star as we normally use 6-8 bottles for a party and the taste is excellent.

I could more easily discuss vodka than Johnny Walker or cognac....out of my drinking league..but, thanks...:)

And, he insists on champagne.

I take it you either have many parties or you just like champagne. A lot. :)

Thanks....

I'd buy a 100 bottles of Andre at $3 a pop

iamkathi 06-29-2004 02:23 PM

These suggestions look good. I'd stay away from the Cristal, unless your friend just wants to be a poser.

Sweetie, Go to Larry's Market at the lower end of Queen Anne. They have a fantastic wine department and educated employees . They can make you some great suggestions at reasonable prices.

I bought my hubby 3 bottles of '95 Silver Oak( Cab) for around $65.00 each from Larry's Market. They were not on the shelf, so be sure to ask if they have something in back :winkwink:

I had the 93 Dom Perignon Rose for my wedding dinner, but there were only 25 of us and it was a gift. A very nice gift!!
It was the best champagne I have had ever.

zanycash Pete 06-29-2004 02:24 PM

I would go for the 3 bottles of Dom!:2 cents:

Larry's Market rocks....but, he's three thousand miles from Larry's...LOL...and I'm telling you, Kathi, he won't go to a wine store....

But, damn....I will go back there. They have THE most interesting foods and concoctions and stuff. Especially their breads.

Thanks for the suggestion, Kathi...see you in Florida..:)
